About the Author

Dr. Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Okalahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award.

Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He was active in graph algorithms from 1990 to 1995 and published more than ten papers in several established journals such as SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. Since 1996, he has devoted to writing texts and published more than thirty books with Prentice Hall. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world.

Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems. He has given lectures on Java internationally.

This book is excellent - it's very through

I have been programming for over 40 years (fortran and cobol) and only in my retirement have I started to learn OOP with JAVA. This book is excellent - it's very through. Reading the negative reviews I can relate to their pain - it's the same pain that I have seen in young engineers learning a complicated subject for the first time (thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, and so on). It takes a while to develop the specific technical sophistication to comprehend the subject matter. Don't give up - it takes reading, and re-reading, and doing all the exercises (and spend the time to actually type in the examples (don't just download them)).

The phases involved in the creative process were first described by German physiologist Herman Helmholtz in the late nineteenth century. (Edwards, 1986, p. 3) He identified three stages of creativity: saturation, incubation and illumination. In the first decade of twentieth century, French mathematician Henri Poincaré identified a fourth step that follows the other three. Verification is putting a solution into concrete form and checking it for errors or usefulness. (shamelessly stolen from http://www.statpac.org/walonick/creativity.htm).

So remember - the first painful step in learning is having your brain saturated, then it has to sit there a while before the 'lightbulb comes on". Finally you have to put it into practice for your brain to 'close the loop.'

Again - this is the best JAVA book I have found that teaches without having to sit in classroom.

I've created many cool programs that no other study of programming had ever ...

Thanks to Liang's creative ways to challenge us through programming problems such as moving a ball across a sine wave or creating a random-walk pattern, I've created many cool programs that no other study of programming had ever taught me. His programming challenges grasp your mind into the passion of puzzle solving and you'll be so addicted that you can't stop working on the problem until you've created something you can be proud of and thus increase your confidence as a programmer and excel to the top of your field.

Teaching the basics of programming is easy, but creating puzzles of programming to develop your skills as a computer scientist is hard - and Liang's book achieves that. I hope he creates more programming puzzles so I can code for days on end.

I was a student in numerous classes with Dr. Liang and have always kept up abreast of changes in the Java API by purchasing Dr. Liang's books. He is a great teacher and really knows and keeps up with the latest. Add this one to your collection as a great resource. Dr. Liang has really made significant improvements in the style, format and readability of the book and as always, has great examples and numerous supplemental resources to go deeper into any specific topic.

About the Author
Dr. Solomon has written several leading college-level textbooks in biology and in human anatomy and physiology. Her books have been translated into more than 10 languages. Dr. Solomon earned an M.S. from the University of Florida and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. Dr. Solomon taught biology and nursing students for more than 20 years. In addition to being a biologist and science author, Dr. Solomon is a bio-psychologist with a special interest in the neuro-physiology of traumatic experience. Her research has focused on the neurological, endocrine, and psychological effects of trauma, including Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and development of maladaptive coping strategies. Dr. Solomon has presented her research at many national and international conferences, and her work has been published in leading professional journals. Dr. Solomon has been profiled more than 30 times in leading publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. Berg is an award-winning teacher and author who taught for 17 years at the University of Maryland in College Park. It was at this institution that she received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching.

Dr. Martin is Professor Emeritus and former Director of General Biology, Division of Life Sciences, Rutgers University. Dr. Martin received an M.S. at Florida State University, where she studied the chromosomes of related plant species to understand their evolutionary relationships. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied the genetics of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and then conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton University. Dr. Martin has taught General Biology and other courses at Rutgers for over 30 years and has been involved in writing textbooks since 1988. She is immensely grateful that her decision to study biology in college has led to a career that allows her many ways to share her excitement about all aspects of biology.

About the Author
Margaret Millar (1915-1994) was born in Ontario, Canada and was educated at Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto, majoring in classics. In 1938 she married Kenneth Millar (who wrote under the name Ross Macdonald). She published her first novel, The Invisible Worm, in 1941 and she worked as a screenwriter for Warner Brothers. She was active in the conservation movement in California in the 1960s and was named a Woman of the Year by the Los Angeles Times in 1965, and in 1982 she became a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America.

A Haunting Read

More than a mystery this is a gothic chiller with a modern twist. Even more than 40 years after it was written, it still holds its spell. Helen Clarvoe is being stalked by a female psycho, who might or might-not be a childhood friend. Meanwhile Evelyn Merrick (or someone who claims to be her) is closing in on Helen, a wealthy heiress absconded in a hotel in L.A.
Who's the hunter? Who's the prey?
This horrifying story will grab you and won't let go till the gory, devastating and haunting conclusion... but do not peek! The narrative will take you there.

Prepare to be dazzled

Margaret Millar writes like an angel. I am so glad to have discovered her and that the publishing world is "rediscovering" such a great talent. Her plotting and characterizations hold their own with the well known British writers. The denouement will not shock readers in the year 2000 as it did readers in 1962. Apart from that quibble, this is a perfect novel of suspense.

Short and chilling

A reclusive heiress, Miss Clarvoe, who lives in a residential hotel in Hollywood and rarely ventures out, begins to receive threatening and malicious phone calls from someone who claims to be her old school friend, Evelyn Merrick. Evelyn was briefly married to Dougie, Miss Clarvoes' brother, before their marriage was annulled after a few days. The caller is someone who enjoys preying on peoples' weaknesses and who gets a thrill by terrifying them with vile, sexually oriented scenarios. Miss Clarvoes' mother asks an old family friend to investigate the calls and, in doing so, he stumbles on a set of circumstances that are so out of character with the people who are receiving the calls, that he is really alarmed. This is a story written in the sixties so perhaps the denouement isn't quite so shocking as it would have been back then but...she kept me guessing up to the last page!

Introduction to assembly language and embedded systems

The purpose of this book is to introduce assembly language to college undergraduates who have had some programming experience. As a result, the book should be easy to follow for anyone already knows a programming language. The book explains the use of ARM's Keil Microcontroller Development Kit, which includes an editor, assembler, and debugger. A "lite" version that is limited to 32KB of code (more than enough for learning assembly language) is available for free. It's a Windows executable, but I have been running it on Linux using WINE with no problems. This means that you do not need an ARM processor to run your ARM programs, and the debugger lets you set breakpoints, single step through code, and observe all the registers and memory as your program executes.

Some of the explanations are not as clear as they could be, such as the initial explanation of condition codes. The book also covers only the ARMv4T instruction set and THUMB instruction set used in ARM7TDMI and later processors, not the newer instructions or new Unified Assembly Language. This coverage is appropriate for programmers new to ARM, because most code uses the older instructions and much existing code uses the old version of the assembly language.

I'd recommend the ARM architecture to anyone who wants to learn an assembly language because the instruction set is relatively simple compared to other popular architectures (namely Intel x86 and x86-64) and is easy to learn. ARM is a very popular architecture for the quickly growing embedded systems market, and it also contains features that are common in newer processors such as conditional execution of instructions to avoid branches. The book has an emphasis on programming for embedded systems, so it includes examples involving digital signal processing, data communications, and interfacing with peripherals.

Assembling ARMs

The book begins with a short but informative intro to RISC and ARM. This opening sets the stage for where ARM fits in the industry and why its importance has grown. By the time you're done with the first 25 pages, you'll also know tech concepts well enough to understand low-level computing systems and how bits become software.

The second chapter provides an introduction to ARM's programming model. Chapter 3 gets you up and running with simple programs. The book refers to a freely available IDE you can use to run programs. The author writes, "Learning assembly requires an adventurous programmer" and your first adventure may be looking for more details on the IDE (in Appendix B.)

After installing the IDE, you'll soon be stepping through your first simple assembly language programs on your own. Run sample programs while reading to keep things interesting.

If you press on beyond the simpler examples, Chapter 4 provides Assembler Directives you'll need for more complicated programs. Chapters 5 thru 11 cover essential, common ingredients in program design - addressing, arithmetic, looping. branching, tables, subroutines, stacks, exceptions etc. If you've previously worked with a higher level language like C, you'll see how ARM's assembly code relates. In a number of descriptive examples, C code snippets are translated directly into Assembly Language.

Chapter 12 was my favorite - rolling the prior chapter lessons into an embedded system design with UART, D/A converter, memory map and more. The book's final two chapters cover THUMB, a 16-bit subset of ARM's instruction set, and guidance for mixing C with Assembly.

This book mixes great technical content with a hands-on opportunity to work in ARM code. The author's experience at ARM helps make this an authoritative text - bringing together his dozen years of engineering work and his role in ARM's academic program. The end result is a book that serves as a great tool for learning the essentials of how ARM works.

Great content on ARM in a very readable text

Although the book wasn't out yet, ARM was kind enough to forward me an excerpt and table of contents from the book. This guy is obviously NOT an academic but an engineer. It's easy to read and the book isn't filled with Greek letters just to make it sound scholarly. I like the fact that you get some tools to use with the book, that is very useful. I wish he talked more about how to mix C and assembly together, and there are a couple of examples that could use more explanation, but otherwise, so far I like the style of the writing. The chapter on arithmetic is by far the best explanation I've seen yet on how to play with integer and fractional math. I've never seen that explained anywhere before. And it's not a bad reference, since you get part of the Architectural Reference Manual in the back. As far as textbooks go, this one is very readable, and would definitely help anyone doing ARM related coursework.

A total let down

My son loves the Little Blue Truck books so I preordered this sticker book for him a long time ago. The books are good for your average 2 or 3 year old. However, the sticker book is for much older kids. The description says minimum age of 4 but it requires that a child be able to read, spell, and count to complete most of the activities. There is only one page for coloring. The stickers are not very cute and are mostly of fruits and vegetables-not the fun characters we are used to from the books. There are approximately 50 stickers. 20 of them are apples! What kid gets excited for apple stickers? Another 16 are pumpkins and gourds. We'll be sending this one back.

I can't imagine that the kids old enough to complete the activities will enjoy it either since they will realistically be too old to care about the books that this is supposed to draw from.

Overall, vastly off par from the quality of the other two Little Blue Truck books.

Activities not for toddlers

We love the Little Blue Truck books, so I was excited to get this for my 2 year old. There are not many stickers with it, and the activities seem to be for older kids, even though the books' audience seems to be under 5. Mine hasn't been interested in it at all, except for playing a little with the stickers.

Don't waste your money. It feels like a bit of a scam! Almost all the stickers are apples or other fruit like squash. I don't know about your toddler, but mine wanted stickers of the farm animal characters and the truck, but there is only one of those, out of the "50 plus" they tout on the cover. If I could return it I would.

About the Author
Amarjit Singh Pabla is presently working as a consultant. He retired as the Chief Engineer with the Punjab State Electricity Board. He began his career with Punjab State Electricity Board in 1964 and has a rich experience in diverse areas, including distribution systems, research and development, rural electrification, substation and transmission designs, power planning and development, tariffs and billing, thermal power plant operation and maintenance, hydro-power plant design, project and monitoring and material management. Mr. Pabla obtained his BSc Engineering (Electrical) degree from Panjab University and MEng Sc (Electrical Engineering) from University of New South Wales, Australia. He has contributed 41 technical papers and has received many awards for some of his contributions. He was honoured by the Institution of Engineers (India) for his outstanding professional contribution in the field of power systems. A Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India), he has authored another book titled Electrical Power Systems Planning.

This undergraduate text presents a view of current research on human memory that relates traditional laboratory-based work to the rich and growing body of evidence from the study of memory in everyday life and in the clinic. The text has three parallel strands; First, an account of what laboratory-based studies have told us about the structure and function of human memory, and how theories are developed and tested. This includes a clear exposition of the relationship between theory development and experimental data and involves a detailed description of key experiments. The links with theories of learning based on conditioning in animals are also explored, particularly the practical implications of such work for the modification of habits and the treatment of emotional disorders. The methods of Artificial Intelligence and Connectionist models of memory based on Parallel Distributed Processing approaches to cognition are considered. The second strand of the book is rather less conventional, approaching the analysis of human memory by starting with the problems people encounter in the world, and using these to motivate an interest in the study of memory in the laboratory. The third strand that runs through the book is concerned with the breakdown of memory in brain-damaged patients. In addition to work on amnesic patients "Human Memory" uses neuropsychological data in order to demonstrate the everyday importance of memory, and includes detailed description of individual patients with memory deficits of various types. The account covers both the theoretical implications of the various deficits and the light they throw on the importance of memory in everyday life. Finally the question is raised of how psychology can help the patients using specific case histories to illustrate the range of single-case and group treatment designs that are now being applied. The book is aimed at a university or college student taking a course in human memory, but assumes that memory lies at the centre of cognition. Consequently the links between memory and attention, perception, action and emotion are stressed, making it a useful core text for a more general course on cognitive psychology. "Human Memory" aims to teach aspects of human learning and memory that will be useful to readers both in understanding their own memory, and in providing a background for a range of possible subsequent courses which might involve education, law, medicine or any of a range of social sciences.

As well as having an impressive list of contents, the book is also extremely enjoyable to read. The author deals with complex issues in an approachable and understandable way and the style is chatty and free of confusing jargon. This is complemented by a liberal sprinkling of anecdotes which both inform and amuse. To summarise, this is an excellent book with no serious rivals in its field. This book presents a highly readable summary of cognitive psychology as related to memory. Covering the evolution of theories of distinct types of memory, the interconnectedness of learning, knowledge and memory, as well as related topics, the connectionist approach to memory, the phenomenon of amnesia and other memory-problems, Baddeley manages to convey a feeling for historical and recent scientific research on the entire subject. Trent C. Butler has a Ph.D. in biblical studies and linguistics from Vanderbilt University, has done further study at Heidelberg and Zurich, and has participated in the excavation of Beersheba.
