The Be All And End All
By Reenie
I loooooove this book. If you have tried and failed to make petite fours then this is the book for you.
My very first batch had guests wanting to find out which bakery I had gotten them from and then wanting to place orders once they knew I had actually made them. Yes they can be time consuming but the book shows that it is little stages and preparation before hand that makes them easier than you would think.

middle of the road...
By casey
I advise all potential buyers to take a peak inside the book and carefullly and thoughtfully read the product details. It's a small book - both in size 7.1 inch x 7.1 inch and about 122 pages thick.

In the book you get approximately:

10 recipes for cakes
10 recipes for syrups to moisten the cakes
10 recipes for fillings to sandwich the layers together
10 recipes for decorations

There are many photos to accompany the final delights. The instructions are easy to follow so even a first-time home baker will have success. Also, there are many hints for successful final petit fours. The price for this book is fair considering the amount of recipes it contains.

I pre-ordered the book and to my chagrin the price has dropped by about $4.

I only give the book 3 stars because I was hoping for more from a professional baker. More exotic flavors and twists on the classics.

I also expected something a bit "larger" than the size listed in the product detail - but Amazon does receive and likewise post inaccurate details. A larger size would've have allowed some of the fillings, syrups, and decoration recipes to be absorbed into one recipe and offered more space and pages for different cake recipes and flavor combinations.

I'd limit recommendation of this book on a case-by-case basis. I mean, compare with giving a meat-lover's cookbook to a vegan or vegetarian. It's not a bad book - but I wish it had more. I'd recommend it to someone I knew just wanted to get started with making petit-fours and not to someone with advanced baking or pastry skills.

Great gift idea for the holidays!
By Ronald Spector
This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn how to make petit fours. The book is cute and small with 127 pages. It includes beautiful petit fours with inspiring photos. I purchased a few of the books along with a box of petit fours from dragonfly cakes as gifts to friends for the holidays. They make the perfect gift for friends that love to bake or just love to eat!

Brings early imperial characters vividly to life.
By SCOTT M WILSON
Really nice piece of historical fiction. Brings early imperial characters vividly to life. Claudius as a character is a great vehicle for this clever narrative.

I initially picked up the story as a pre-Italy vacation book. Now I can't wait to see the room from "Villa Livia" in the Museo Nazionale Romano (Palazzo Massimo Alle Terme). What a wonderfully monstrous character she was!

The beginning of the book flew by, then it got a bit bogged down until Caligula took power toward the last stretch of the book. He was worth the wait - what a terror. Some of the names are tough to follow. Lots of characters zip by, but the author does a good job of jogging your recollection of some of the recurring or important minor ones.

Having savored the completion of the book for a couple of days now, I think the things that will stay with me are:

--> how familiar tyranny is whenever it occurs in history
--> how interesting that this was written in the 1930s with fascism on the rise
--> Caligula was totally outrageous - but familiar at the same time
--> how remarkable it is that some people ever assume power -- perhaps few so remarkable as poor Claudius
--> wow - the power of poison

Claudius: The Reluctant Emperor
By Maxine A. Hartley
It has been over 70 years since Robert Graves wrote: 'I, Claudius' and 'Claudius The God' but they are still relevant and fascinating reading, especially to those who are interested in ancient Roman history and are curious as to where our society began and who structured it. The answers are: in Rome by Romans.

While the Republic was dead by the time of Claudius (who followed Caesar Caligula, who followed Augustus, who followed Julius Caesar) Claudius always hoped to be Emperor only as long as it took him to re-establish the Republic. Since crises followed crises in quick succession, Claudius was unable to get his wish, which was to return to writing his histories and he died disappointed that this one wish had not been fulfilled.

He was reluctant to begin with. Born lame and stuttering with a head which jerked from side to side (modern doctors think that he had, perhaps, cerebral palsey) he was considered an idiot because of the infirmity of his body. But Claudius had an intelligence far above that of normal and early on in his life, learned Greek (and later, other languages) and began writing histories of Rome and surrounding territories. Because his whole family kept disappearing in quick succession (particularly under the mad Caligula) and were primarily poisoned, he acted the fool and hid away as much as possible, concentrating on his extensive research and his writing. Then the guards murdered Caligula and raising Claudius on their shoulders, proclaimed him Emperor. And so the reluctant reign of this benign,compassionate caesar began.

In 43 A.D. Claudius conquered the Southern Britains and managed to get the queen of southern Wales and the king of Kent on his side as friends and allies of Rome. He couldn't be an active general because of his disabilities but his brilliant mind devised strategic trickery to subdue the Britains. Into the battle fray, he drove elephants and camels, animals from the territories of Rome but strange to the superstitious Britains. This frightened several of the troops enough that they ran away.

Claudius was also reponsible for solving the problems of the Jews in Alexandria (his childhood friend was Herod Agrippa who was raised in Rome) and in 'Syria', roughly, the territory of current day Israel and Palestine. He also made Ostia a secure port, work which took 20 years to complete, so that the grain supply for Rome from Sicily and Africa would reach Rome safely to feed the city during the winter. Claudius also constructed several aqueducts to ensure that the city had clean drinking water, particularly the 'lower' orders, i.e. the plebeians. Previously,disease was rampant in Rome in the winter since the only drinking water for the city residents was the befouled Tiber, into which all sewage ran.

For his historical research, Robert Graves says that he borrowed from historians: Tacitus, Dio Cassius, Seutonius, Pliny, Varro, Valerius Maximus, Orosius, Frontinus, Strabo, Caesar (Julius), Columella, Plutarch, Josephus, Diodorus, Siculus, Photius, Xiphilinus, Zonaras, Seneca, Petronius, Juvenal, Philo, Calsus, the Acts of the Apostles the pseudo-gospels of Nicodemus and St. James and last but not least, Claudius, in his surviving letters and speeches.(Unfortunately, most of Claudius's writings did not survive.) Graves says: 'Few incidents here given are wholly unsupported by historical authority of some sort or other....No character is invented.'

Claudius adopted his stepson, Lucius, who ruled as the infamous Nero.

We are reading of the slow disintegration of Rome through decadence and greed. It probably would have occurred faster than it did, if compassionate and reasonable leaders such as Julius Caesar and Claudius did not appear from time to time. Unfortunately, these leaders were in the minority and mad leaders such as Caligula and Nero became the norm.

Is there a lesson for modern society? I believe there is and it is this: Be as rich as you can be, but do as much as you can for all members of society, particularly the ones which fortune, for one reason of another, has deprived. Only when NO members of society are disenfranchised can a society survive and thrive.

Warning on Text: Unless you have super-sonic eyes, find out what sort of print the text has. The Penguin edition is good, large enough on which to focus. Some of the editions have such small print that one would need a magnifying glass. Penguin is borderline in print size, but one can manage without red-rimmed eyes in the morning.

Survival amidst violence, corruption and chaos
By Guillermo Maynez
Through the voice of Graves, Claudius, or even better, Tiberius Caludius Drusus Nero Germanicus, later Emperor of Rome, tells us his story, a story of precarious survival in a world of intrigue, betrayal, lies and dangerous madmen (and madwomen). Sickly, limp, deaf in one ear, and stammering, Claudius is right from his birth a shy, timorous and diminished boy. In consequence, almost everybody believes him to be hopelessly stupid. Everybody rejects him, except his beloved older brother Germanicus and his friend Postumus, but even these treat him only as their poor protege. His parents tend to his needs, but nothing else. His grandmother Livia, the most fascinating character in the book, despises and hates him. All the rest simply mock or ignore him.

Claudius, with his peculiar and acid sense of humor, tells us the story beginning two generations before his birth. At the end of the Civil War provoked by Julius Ceasar, Augustus (originally Octavian) attains victory and installs him as de-facto Emperor of Rome (it would be centuries later that the pretensions of Republican institutions would be officially disappeared). Livia, a woman sick with ambition and lust for power, divorces Claudius's grandfather and marries Augustus. Thus begins a story of centralization of power, of poisonings and blackmailing, of a power-behind-the-throne which makes Lady Macbeth look like an innocent school girl. Livia is a portent: she possesses incredible political and administrative skills, and she becomes the perfect partner of the noble, capable, but sometimes naive Augustus, who consults with her every matter. Augustus plays good cop: he is honest and magnanimous, the friendly face of the regime. Livia does all the dirty work, with dedication and efficiency. For a moment, the Empire ceases its expansionist efforts, and the resources are dedicated to consolidation of frontiers and to the strengthening of infrastructure and administrative apparatus. A spirit of sacrifice and service prevails. Heroes abound, remarkably Drusus, Claudius's father, and then Germanicus, the older brother and true Hero of Rome. Both men preserve ideas about Republican restoration, something they will pay dearly for.

While many things are passing, Claudius grows up silently in the shadow. Little by little, some people (his two friends, his two servants and his two teachers) discover that the family fool is in fact a clever, observant, just and gentle guy. But no one else notices, which is exactly what saves his life, since no one envies him or feels he is a threat.

When he is thirteen, still living in Rome, Claudius falls in love with an angelical creature, his soulmate, to whom he is promised in marriage. I won't spoil for you what happens the day of the wedding, but suffice it to say that his subsequent married life will be horrible.

During the following years, Claudius retires to live at his villa in Capua, where his only company are some faithful servants and the two successive prostitutes who become his only true friends. After Augustus's death, the obscure Tiberius raises to the throne. Tiberius is a capable politician, soldier and administrator, but he is also a sexual degenerate, a puppet in the hands of his mother Livia, who progressively becomes a paranoid murderer and an intolerable tyrant. Tiberius's years are for Claudius a time of great intellectual achievements (he is an historian and writer), as well as a time of a personal nightmare, for one by one his loved ones are murdered by Tiberius and Livia. Then Tiberius's debacle sets in and he is succeeded by Caligula. Claudius's nephew and Livia's grand-grandson (Livia finally dies at age 86) begins his reign as a benevolent and generous ruler. But one day, after a month of sickness, Caligula sends for Claudius and tells him the real truth: He is God, more powerful than Jupiter. What follows, horrible but fun to read, is the crazed story of a living Devil. Dispend, negligence, murder, degenerate orgies and almost the ruin of the Empire, until the furious masses kill Caligula and crown the ultimate survivor, the only capable man left alive but who, alas, doesn't want to be Emperor.

Thus finishes the first part of Claudius's life, masterfully told by a Classicist, poet and narrator of the first order. This is one of the bloodiest and cruellest books you'll ever going to read, but it is extremely entertaining, illuminating and solid.

U.S. Foreign Policy: The Paradox of World Power, by Steven W Hook

The United States still faces no credible rival to challenge its supremacy, even after years of economic crisis and war. And yet, the very sources that give rise to its primacy—exceptionalism, the diffusion of power, and the involvement of civil society in the foreign policy process—also create vulnerabilities.

The new third edition of U.S. Foreign Policy provides students with a concise and accessible overview of this foreign policy paradox, and highlights the challenges facing policy makers.

Key updates include complete coverage of President Obama’s first year in office, the administration’s new emphasis on engagement, the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the economic crisis. Students will also find a thorough review of the lessons of the Bush administration, including examinations of the rivalry between the State and Defense Departments, intelligence breakdowns, human rights controversies, and unilateralism.

Instructors will appreciate the chapter organization, crisp writing, pedagogical features, and overall brevity that they have come to expect from this bestseller.

Review
Steven Hook's U.S. Foreign Policy is an exemplary introductory text, capturing the paradoxes and complexities of American policy while remaining accessible, engaging, and theoretically coherent. Students will appreciate its clarity and intuitive layout, while instructors will value its thoughtful treatment of the full range of institutional actors, structures, and processes shaping American foreign policy. Comprehensive, visually appealing, and compatible with a wide range of perspectives, it is an ideal core text for upper-division political science courses with a strong conceptual and institutional focus. --Andrew Flibbert, Trinity College

U.S. Foreign Policy: The Paradox of World Power is a timely and accessible work that examines the limitations of American preeminence in a time of increasing global complexity. Hook provides a clear, informative, and comprehensive analysis of domestic and international dynamics that shape American foreign policy decisions. The author includes key historical developments and theories of international relations that elucidates elite decision making. My undergraduate students found the book to be engaging, provoking discussion and debate on the challenging role that confronts the United States today. --Debra Sabia, Georgia Southern University

This is one of the best texts I have used that fundamentally grapples with the complexities and constraints of American foreign policy in the 21st century. The framework of the Paradox of Power carries even greater explanatory power than before and is easily incorporated into the debates over the War in Iraq and the War in Afghanistan, in addition to other important policy domains such as trade, globalization (and all that it brings), and the environment. Moreover, the book makes a strong connection between the internal and external variables that impact foreign policy; in sum, this is the type of comprehensive text that students can grasp and employ in developing their own understanding of American foreign policy. --Peter Loedel, West Chester University

Excellent Book
By D. Fine
This book is an excellent text for any one interested in foreign policy. I purchased it for my Political Science Foreign Policy class and it has truly been helpful. The text is well written and easy to follow, even for those who may not be political science / foreign policy buffs. I would recommend this for anyone interested in learning about governmental relations and the policies that have formed current U.S. foreign policy procedures.

Great for a Slanted Perspective
By Arctic_Knight907
I had to buy this book for my American Foreign Policy class and from the onset the author, Hook, provides a highly critical perspective of American Foreign Policy and the U.S.'s current grand strategy of global premacy. The book is also incredibly critical of all of President George W. Bush's policies while providing a highly positive review of President Barack Obama's very short tenure (since the book only contains information up to 2010). For instance, it considered Obama's organization of U.S. foreign relief aid in Haiti as an example of his more cooperative approach to foreign policy as opposed to all of George W. Bush's approach during all 8 years of his administration, ignoring several instances where Bush sought and obtained international cooperation. Admittedly, Bush, like any president has made decisions in foreign policy that in retrospect ended up not being beneficial. But Hook's wholesale attack of Bush's policies and praise of just two years of a current administration's policies (which, to be fair, to that point had been very few and far between) lacks the balance that should accompany any academic overview of a topic.

If you are looking for a unbalanced perspective on U.S. foreign policy, Hook is your author.

The First Five Pages: A Writer's Guide To Staying Out of the Rejection Pile, by Noah Lukeman

IF YOU'RE TIRED OF REJECTION, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.
Whether you are a novice writer or a veteran who has already had your work published, rejection is often a frustrating reality. Literary agents and editors receive and reject hundreds of manuscripts each month. While it's the job of these publishing professionals to be discriminating, it's the job of the writer to produce a manuscript that immediately stands out among the vast competition. And those outstanding qualities, says New York literary agent Noah Lukeman, have to be apparent from the first five pages.
The First Five Pages reveals the necessary elements of good writing, whether it be fiction, nonfiction, journalism, or poetry, and points out errors to be avoided, such as
* A weak opening hook
* Overuse of adjectives and adverbs
* Flat or forced metaphors or similes
* Melodramatic, commonplace or confusing dialogue
* Undeveloped characterizations and lifeless settings
* Uneven pacing and lack of progression
With exercises at the end of each chapter, this invaluable reference will allow novelists, journalists, poets and screenwriters alike to improve their technique as they learn to eliminate even the most subtle mistakes that are cause for rejection. The First Five Pages will help writers at every stage take their art to a higher -- and more successful -- level.

Amazon.com Review
The difference between The First Five Pages and most books on writing is that the others are written by teachers and writers. This one comes from a literary agent--one whose clients include Pulitzer Prize nominees, New York Times bestselling authors, Pushcart Prize recipients, and American Book Award winners. Noah Lukeman is not trying to impart the finer points of writing well. He wants to teach you "how to identify and avoid bad writing," so that your manuscript doesn't come boomeranging back to you in that self-addressed, stamped envelope. Surprise: Agents and editors don't read manuscripts for fun; they are looking for reasons to reject them. Lukeman has arranged his book "in the order of what I look for when trying to dismiss a manuscript," starting with presentation and concluding with pacing and progression. Each chapter addresses a pitfall of poor writing--overabundance of adjectives and adverbs, tedious or unrealistic dialogue, and lack of subtlety to name just a few--by identifying the problem, presenting solutions, giving examples (one wishes these weren't quite so obvious), and offering writing exercises. It's a little bizarre to think about approaching your work as would an agent, but if you are serious about getting published, you may as well get used to it. Plus, Lukeman has plenty of solid advice worth listening to. Particularly fine are his exercises for removing and spicing up modifiers and his remedies for all kinds of faulty dialogue. --Jane Steinberg

From Library Journal
Novice and amateur writers alike will benefit from literary agent Lukeman's lucid advice in this handy, inexpensive little book. Lukeman draws on his years of editorial experience to present an inside look at manuscript submission. He provides suggestions, examples, and practice exercises designed to lift ordinary prose to a higher level. Covering writing fundamentals, including viewpoint, tone, pacing, character development, grammar, and more, Lukeman sprinkles examples of common writing problems and simple solutions throughout the text. Carrying the craft of writing beyond Strunk and White's classic Elements of Style, this book should find a wide audience; public libraries sponsoring writers' groups and workshops will want multiple copies. Academic libraries will want several copies to share with writing labs. Highly recommended.

Stop reading after Chapter 6
By A Customer
Noah Lukeman's book starts out strong with a new slant on much of the writing advice already out there: less is more, and most is even less than that. The exercises in the adjective and adverbs chapter are so helpful that they completely transformed the first chapter of my manuscript. Thanks, Mr. Lukeman.
However, once beyond his excellent treatments on modifiers, sound, comparison, and style, one becomes acutely aware that like writing, editing is a highly subjective field. Many of the techniques that he advocates for sentence construction and dialogue directly contradicts the advice of other well-credentialed editors. This is where a strong sense of the strengths of your own writing, the conventions of your genre, and the preferences of your agent or editor is going to help you, and where "The First Five Pages" will fall short.
Rather than strictly being a "how not to get rejected off the bat" guide as the cover blurb claims, "The First Five Pages" also endeavors to show you how to write the best novel you can. That's fine. But if you take Lukeman too seriously, you might come to the conclusion that he would rather you not write at all than have a single word out of place. It comes as no surprise, them, that towards the end of the book (and prominent on his literary agency's webpage), we find Lukeman's particular bias: "Ovid, the Roman poet, said one should wait nine years after finishing one's work before seeking publication. Here lies the difference between someone writing for money and a writer."
If it's your goal to win a Pulitzer Prize, that's an admirable sentiment. For the rest of us making our livings as writers, who want to write great stories that make people think or feel, you are well advised to pick and choose from Lukeman's advice.
If you can only buy one book on writing, I instead recommend Donald Maass's excellent book "How to Write the Breakout Novel" which not only focuses on good writing, but the themes and techniques which can make a novel a best-seller. Additionally, "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers" by Renni Browne and Dave King gives some excellent tips, though they disagree with Lukeman on some key points.
My best advice is to read as many of these books as you can: take to heart those points on which everyone agrees, internalize the rest, and just write.

A swing and a miss
By Daniel L. Edelen
Noah Lukeman offers what every beginning writer needs: insider information. As a literary agent with a stable of award-winning authors, Lukeman offers to dish the publishing dirt that will ensure anyone's manuscript rises to the top of any agent or publisher's stack.

But does the book live up to the marketing?

Lukeman covers the basics that are currently in vogue:

* Delivering a professional-looking manuscript

* Limiting the number of adjectives and adverbs, making certain the few that are used are punchy and unusual

* Verbalizing a manuscript to screen for its overall sound

* Choosing original metaphors and similes

* Avoiding a precious or contrived style

* Balancing realistic dialogue with narration

* Punching up ho-hum dialogue

* Driving the story through dialogue

* Cutting out melodrama

* Simplifying complex character interaction

* Showing, not telling

* Perfecting narrative and POV

* Creating realistic characters

* Crafting hooks without being manipulative

* Learning subtlety

* Maintaining a consistent tone

* Keeping the manuscript's focus

* Devising believable settings that involves all five senses

* Pacing the work through a natural progression

While this is an excellent list of issues to address in a writing book, the problem comes from the trade size and the under-200 page length. For Lukeman to cover these topics to any depth beyond absolute beginner stage, he needs at least fifty percent more content per issue.

There are other problems that limit the usefulness of this book. The examples of bad writing are so blatant that their usefulness is questionable. The advice on how to fix writing problems is okay, but never transcends beginning-level wisdom. Any writer hoping to do the very thing Lukeman promises--get that manuscript published--could do worse, but with so many other outstanding writing books out there, why stick with one that's merely fair? Considering the author's pedigree, his book is a letdown.

For any writer who has never picked up a book on writing, this one's acceptable. For the rest of us, though, consider looking for something more weighty (such as "Stein on Writing.")

Excellent resource for any writer
By DMReader
This was a great book and essential if you're a writer hoping to put out a book. Whether you want to go with an agent, publisher, or want to publish on your own, you need to read this book. It has concise examples of common problems that cause books to be rejected with a good explanation and clear examples. It highlights problems that many writers have and should be aware of going forward in their careers. Regardless of what path you take, you should learn these lessons and make your writing more readable for editors, publishers, and readers.

Behavior Change: A View from the Inside Out, by Hank Fieger

This insightful and personal handbook offers business leaders, teachers, therapists, coaches--individuals from all walks of life--a working guide to help them modify, improve, and change their behavior. Embracing the belief that effective behavior resides within each individual, Behavior Change does not tell its readers what they need to do differently but rather illuminates the process of changing behavior based on four fundamental principles:

* Awareness and acceptance are the first steps to creating lasting change.

* Understanding what holds habitual behavior in place is key to doing things differently.

* Improvement means making a new choice and replacing old behavior patterns with more effective and productive ones.

* Reinforcement emphasizes that practice with feedback brings improvement.

Change we can believe in AND adhere to
By Lawrence J. Galardi
In an era fraught with economic peril, as well as emerging competitive pressures via changing fiscal dynamics and growing online marketplaces, Hank Fieger reminds readers that self-success hinges on individual behavior traits ... and modification. In a quick read that is both brisk and detailed oriented, Mr. Fieger's treatise on behavior change traces a methodical progression of beliefs, values, attitude, etc. As a book devoted to the benefits of self-awareness and fine-tuning, Behavior Change is perfectly suited for business executives, entrepreneurs, politicians, thought leaders and everyday individuals. It is a handbook of sorts that successfully equips readers with essential tools that assist people in how they assess, amend, improve and positively develop behavior -- and ultimately how their behavior is perceived by various constituencies. As someone who is currently building a new business. Behavior Change shed light on the vital processes around how I can understand what behavior needs modification. From there, the book walked me through how I can build a necessary change that endures, isolate productive traits that work (and don't work), and tap into feedback from others to sustain that behavior change.

If you're considering holiday gift options for colleagues, clients or business partners, Hank Fieger's Behavior Change is bound to be a step in the right direction.

Experiential Knowledge
By IP Randhawa
This is a well written book, but more importantly, it is the generous sharing of wisdom born of a vast and diverse experience of life, human psyche, teaching, learning and self-improvement. There is a good deal of information in this book, garnered pearls of wisdom from a variety of sources, put together in a simple, easy to understand and implement presentation. The fact that this information is personalized by the author's life experiences lends it the credibility of experiential knowledge acquired through the only way the human brain really learns, trial, error and improvement (evolution).
