Very Dissapointed

The information in this book is difficult enough to learn, and the way it is presented here compounds the problem.

The Information and examples are not explained thoroughly or completely (to compressed) can be very over whelming.

There are many practice problems at the end of each chapter (great) there is one problem ...there are no ANSWERS???. I was not able to find a solutions manual. I even emailed the author (I got no reply). Very difficult to know if your solving the Practice Problems correctly if you don't have any solved practice prolems let alone any answers. I did manage to pick up some of what the author was trying to say, but i had to read each chapter numerous times. The website referred to in the book has a few solved example problems for each chapter, but many are hand written and could not be interpreted. In all honesty I was using this book in conjunction with a self study coarse and did not have the benefit of an instructor.I would not reccomend using this book alone,when trying to grasp this subject.

Plain Language a Plus -- But Doesn't Go Enough Into Detail

The fact that this book is written in plain language is great, it makes a lot of concepts a lot easier to digest. However, the material here is extremely patchy. As a student learning this for the first time, I've found that this textbook isn't exactly the most effective due to the holes between content areas. The author seems to go into detail about things that seem unimportant, while he/she skims over the real meat of the subject. And what's worse is the fact that there are no worked out examples. If there were more worked examples, concepts might click amongst the patchy conceptual explanations. There is MATLAB scattered throughout the text, which I've found useful at times, but it too is not explained well-enough. All in all, this is not a text that I recommend to those in their introductory signal processing courses, rather, I recommend this text to those who have already taken introductory signal processing classes and are in need of a review text. As a review for those already in the know, this text seems great.

This book would be excellent for someone who is already familiar with signals but is not good for the student who is learning the topic. Very few examples and no student solutions manual makes it a hard sell. For those after theory only.

Helped me learn a lot, but nubes might have issues

I found this book very helpful. After hearing about how effective the previous versions were, I was really excited to try the new edition! I just hope now that the rest of the series will be remade soon.
Over all, the book was structured very well. Information was presented clearly,simply, and accurately. Sometimes, however, explanation of the grammar points were WAY too simple- which, in several instances, would have certainly been misleading to a beginning learner with no previous knowledge of Korean. Fortunately, I dove into this book having already studied Korean for 6 months so I already had a decent understanding of the language to know that some explanations were lacking (I checked things with my Korean friends too).
For me, this book basically served as an excellent way to review what I had learned and to go beyond with new material. I definitely benefited from the abundant vocabulary provided- although I would have preferred it to be presented using pictures along with the definitions, but that's just me. Also a great help were the "pronunciation" tips at the bottom of pages which had confusing-to-pronounce vocab words.
One noteworthy problem I had was that, sometimes, the directions for the writing exercises were so unclear that I had absolutely no idea about what to write in the blanks. Sometimes what the questions were asking was completely unrelated to the grammar that was presented in the lesson. Both of these issues combined, however, didnt occur more than 4 times, so it didn't bother me too much.

This book is great and I highly recommend it, however it contents are will be the most useful to one who already understands the basics of Korean, not a complete beginner, which is unfortunate to say because the hangul learning/writing lessons and super basic conversation and grammar lessons in the beginning of the book are excellent for those with no former knowledge of the language. The more complex grammar in the middle and towards the end are a totally different story.

Over the past years I have had the pleasure of working in Korea at some remote locations where English is not used. Therefore to survive I purchased a number of Korean language books, cassettes and CD's. In short they were either so americanised even the Koreans in Korea could not understand the so called Korean learning recordings. To add more frustration the material was not of a general use as the course summary said.
Guided by a Korean friend I purchase the "Korean Through English" books with Tapes and CD's. Without assistance I studied books 1 & 2 and worked the CD's. The literature is easy and clear to follow, I have completed book 1 and started book 2 (set of 3). The books learning's are used daily in Korea, when I use my Korean in Korea the locals understand me and the learning's were of such a nature that it was very useful. What is nice, as the locals can understand my intent they are more than willing to help me with my pronunciation.

First published in Brazil in 1988 as Turning the Tables , this book was the all-time best-selling nonfiction book in Brazil's history. Semler, the 34-year-old CEO, or "counselor," of Semco, a Brazilian manufacturing firm, describes how he turned his successful company into a "natural business" in which employees hire and evaluate their bosses, dress however they want, participate in major decisions, and share in 22 percent of the profits. Semler believes that Semco is different from most companies that have participatory management because employees are given the power to make decisions--even ones, with which the CEO wouldn't normally agree. Semler claims, "This is not a business book. It is a book about work, and how it can be changed for the better." Highly recommended.

What makes for a successful company? In a sometimes breathless, often boyish manner, Semler, a counselor of a Brazilian company (Semco), relates the transformation of a traditionally structured business into one quite literally without walls and rules. Semler details his not-so-easy steps in the metamorphosis: abolishing dress codes and regulations; decentralizing plants; getting rid of paperwork and titles (hence, his appellation as counselor, not CEO); and creating a consultative democracy in which employees set their own salaries and work hours and vote on managerial candidates, among other responsibilities. If it sounds too much like utopia, Semler admits that Brazil's economic downturn has impacted Semco and that, yes, being born with a silver spoon certainly colors his vision. My Favorite Business Book Ever

I must have bought people 20 copies of this book...at least. This book is the best distillation of what democracy, honesty, transparency and courage look like in the workplace. They produce spectacular financial result and deep fulfillment for the employees. I read this book in 2006 or earlier for the first time and I keep coming back to it over and over again. Although his business is a complex manufacturing business, you can apply the lessons here to small or large companies, sales organizations, restaurants, tech companies and non-profits. The book is radical...and surprisingly revolutionary. It also makes you realize, by describing in such detail what an ultra high trust work environment looks like, how much of our workplaces treat us like dishonest children...and we often fulfill those expectations. I don't say it lightly...but this book was life changing and still in for me...

First 100 pages were great

I really liked the first 1/3 of this book up to page 100. But then past that I was struggling to finish it. I kept pushing myself to read a few more pages with hopes that it would get better. But finally stopped around page 200 and then skimmed through the remainder. The first part was great because it covers the authors story of running the company traditionally and then implementing a lot of the new policies. Which was very thought provoking and pretty amazing considering this was over 25 years ago.

After page 100 each chapter covered a story about hiring someone or moving them to another department. Or implementing something else. And it just became really boring and drawn out for me. And when he writes about subsidizing lunches for workers making less money, and allowing employees to set their own salaries based on things like living expenses it comes across to be a bit socialist leaning. And I don't mean that in a good or bad way. On the first page the author writes that it's not purely capitalistic or socialist. He writes that it's a new way. A third way. And it seems like that third way has borrowed tenets from each.

Anyway, This book should be read to challenge your current thinking and to read about a more democratic work environment. Even if you only make it to page 100. It should not be read as a complete guide for a company or as if everything covered is the absolute best way to do things.

The start of a new era?????

I bought this book because I read about Semco and what its boss had created.
From what I heard he had created a workplace that was democratic, fun to work at and all in all a good lesson of how companies can be run. So, when I found out he had written a book about it, I wanted to read it.

And I was not disappointed. He describes clearly and with great detail how he transformed his fathers company from a bureaucratic, top-down run company into a much more democratic and fun workplace. And it all started with allowing employees to vote on which color uniforms they want.

All in all, I love this book. It seems to be part of a new era about working differently from the past. Perhaps era is not the right word, but movement might be a better description. Other elements in this movement are ROWE from Jodi Thompson and Cali Ressler, Beyond Budgeting, Alexander Kjerulf with his Positive Sharing website as being the Chief Happiness Officer, Tim Ferriss with his Four Hour Workweek, the guys from 37signals and many others.

This book provides a framework for thinking about economic institutions such as firms. The basic idea is that institutions arise in situations where people write incomplete contracts and where the allocation of power or control is therefore important. Power and control are not standard concepts in economic theory. The book begins by pointing out that traditional approaches cannot explain on the one hand why all transactions do not take place in one huge firm and on the other hand why firms matter at all. An incomplete contracting or property rights approach is then developed. It is argued that this approach can throw light on the boundaries of firms and on the meaning of asset ownership. In the remainder of the book, incomplete contracting ideas are applied to understand firms' financial decisions, in particular, the nature of debt and equity (why equity has votes and creditors have foreclosure rights); the capital structure decisions of public companies; bankruptcy procedure; and the allocation of voting rights across a company's shares. The book is written in a fairly non-technical style and includes many examples. It is aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students, academic and business economists, and lawyers, as well as those with an interest in corporate finance, privatization and regulation, and the transition from socialism to capitalism. Little background knowledge is required, since the concepts are developed as the book progresses and the existing literature is fully reviewed.

One of the best economics books I've ever read

One of the best economics books I've ever read, a beautiful combination of wisdom and clarity. On the first page, Hart starts off with a real-life example of an incomplete contract--a home repair or remodeling contract, if memory serves. Then he shows you how prudent (shrewd?) people will tend to set up firms and financial contracts when the world is like that, when the only contracts you can write are incomplete ones, where you want to create incentives today for your partner to behave well in the complicated, unpredictable future.

Hart's book shows the payoff to pure economic theory. He makes his points with algebra and good clear microeconomic thinking. Strongly recommended for advanced undergraduates and anyone who has wondered why the economy is organized the way it is.

Brilliant piece

I was not interested in any micro theory prior to reading this book. I felt many modern advances in micro theory is purely mathematicians' game, which has little relevance towards reality. That view changed first when I had the pleasure to learn contract theory from Hart. His immensely interesting lecture lured me into actually reading his book, from which his lecture draws and is as fascinating and lucid as his lecture. His explanation is very clear, and refers back to his canonical model of GM to illustrate how theory is relevant to reality. He demonstrates how contract theory answers some questions that neoclassical theory or any established theory could not answer. Another strength of this book and of Hart is that he is able to answer intriguing and important questions using simple mathematics--All the models presented are striped-down, with no unnecessary complications, and the core insight and intuition is not buried in messy complications. To conclude, this is a wonderful book if your are looking for some insights into the organizations of firms.

About the Author
Born in London in 1963, Mark Ovenden evinced an early fascination with trains and TV that has remained with him over the course of his life. Following college he pursued a number of positions in local government and on the radio promoting progressive attitudes towards gay issues before getting a full time job at BBC Radio 1 as a producer. In 1998 he joined MTV as a freelance Music Programmer, where he gave birth to another production company which went on to produce shows for Atlantic252. There Mark was later taken on as a presenter of a weekly record review show with Chris Coco and as their specialist programmes producer and later breakfast newsreader.

When Atlantic252 closed down Mark moved to Ministry Of Sound where he helped set up their DAB station, Ibiza unit and later, as Head of Radio there, ran a popular FM version of the station. Mark moved into consultancy after this working with Purple radio and the DRG.

In 2002 while still working in his spare time on his book project he moved to a fledgling TV channel as Channel Manager.

Mark Ovenden's Metro Maps of the World was published in November 2003 to great critical acclaim. It has since been re-written and updated for the American market and is now published by Penguin as Transit Maps of the World. Mark currently resides in Paris where he is researching his next book on a century of cartography of the Paris Metro Map. He is also working on several other book projects, a radio sit-com, and a TV travel show.

a real treasure!

If you're like me, and enjoy poring over maps, you'll find this book a treat. If all the book had were reproductions of current urban rail maps, it would be worth at least 4 stars. But there's much more. There is a short history of urban rail from its earliest days, and then you have maps and text for about 200 cities around the world. You get narratives on the history of each system, but the emphasis is on the evolution of the transit maps themselves. For some cities, up to about 20 maps are reproduced, and some of these date back to the 19th century. There's a wonderful sense of the conflict between having maps that are aesthetically pleasing and maps that are pleasing to someone trying to find their way around.

The book is divided into 6 zones (rather than chapters), with the distinction based primarily on the evolution of the maps:
zone 1: 8 cities, 4 pages per city. Example: Paris, 17 maps dating back to 1900.
zone 2: 15 cities, 2 pages per city. Example: Boston, 5 maps dating back to 1926.
zone 3: 28 cities, 1 page per city. Amsterdam, 4 maps.
zone 4: 16 cities, 2 cities per page, usually 1-2 maps per city.
zone 5: 18 cities, 1-3 cities per page, mostly 1 map per city.
zone 6: 140? cities, about 12 cities per page, often without maps, very short narratives.

The one problem you'll have is that many of the original maps were very large, and so when the transit map of Greater New York is faithfully reduced to two-thirds of a page in the book, you'll either need remarkable eyesight or a very strong magnifying glass to make out details. But the book is not intended as a catch-all way to actually find your way around, but rather as a paean to maps--you're intended to enjoy looking at the maps, not using them for transit purposes. A real delight!

A timely update to the first edition in 2003 with a new Zone: 6, listing all the latest and proposed subway systems around the globe. This extra Zone now includes hybrids like tram-trains, monorail or light rail and they all need maps. The other five Zones in the original have had their contents revised also.

I think the beauty of the book is in looking at the way various transit companies have approached the problem of communicating (sometimes complex) information in a simple way for passengers yet each map has its unique points. The book's authors rightly trace the origins of the modern designed transit map to London Transport's Harry Beck. His genius was to discard the geographic location of stations and have route lines as either vertical, horizontal or at forty-five degrees. It's amazing to see how many maps of the dozens in the book still follow this general principal.

However, creating a map that might look graphically stunning is not always enough. New York's MTA got Massimo Vignelli to design their map and it looks a visual treat but passengers weren't impressed and found it confusing so the MTA revised it. Vignelli's 1979 map and the latest 2007 MTA one are shown together on a spread in the book, two maps with the same information yet looking so different.

This update has a few more train and station photos to fill the space that was frequently left blank in the first edition and there is a nice touch with a spread near the back that includes some fantasy maps. If I have a fault with the book it is that in the new Zone 6 section many of the maps are so small that I don't think they were worth including.

I thinks it's worth pointing out that Transit Maps is not designed as a reference guide for travelers to cities around the world but as a celebration of the beauty that is inherent in these colorful diagrams.

Comments from a transit fan and a map lover

As you can tell from the title, I was drawn to this book from two of my interests. This book is great! It gives samples of current and historical maps from transit systems all over the world, and it is a treat to look at. I have only two minor faults to find -- not enough to detract from the 5-star rating: 1. some of the maps are reproduced too small (I wish he had made the 1911 Brooklyn elevated map full page size, for example) or too dark (a Chicago transit map from the late 1940s is very hard to read) and 2. (very much my own personal taste) I wish he had included some historical maps from Philadelphia (he only has a current map of that city, one of my favorites).

One thing that does seem a bit strange: Although it is no surprise that the author, a native of London, writes in British English, it is rather odd that he seems to find it necessary to translate the *names* of American transit companies into British English, changing "transportation" to "transport" and "railroad" to "railway." Most people would, I think, leave the official names alone!

I hope the author reads this comment so he might be able to take it into account if he comes out with a revised edition -- I know this one has already been revised from the original.
