It's actually a pretty good read.

You can tell that Eitzen is a Marxist. He approaches social problems as conflict theorist. The thing is that Eitzen doesn't tend offer actual solution, but I guess that up to our generation. All and all it's a good book easy to follow.

O, The Oprah Magazine's Top 10 Favorite Books of 2015.
Washington Post Best Science Fiction & Fantasy Books of 2015.

"Fascinating... A heart-piercing tale of love, desire and acceptance. Readers will be mesmerized by Dibbell’s staccato prose as much as they are by the harrowing circumstances this mother and child must endure."
—Washington Post

"Breathtaking. [Dibbell has] delivered a debut novel on par with some of the best speculative fiction of the past 30 years; The Only Ones deserves to be shelved alongside Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Nalo Hopkinson's Brown Girl in the Ring, and P. D. James' The Children of Men. It's that good, and that important, and that heartbreakingly beautiful."
—NPR

"A genre-bending work of punk-rock science fiction."
—Nylon

"Densely written but swiftly told, this first novel from rock critic Dibbell starts out as literary dystopia and ends up as a deft study of human identity, desperation, and longing."
—Library Journal

"A well-known rock critic, Dibbell infuses her debut novel with the stylistic grace of a seasoned writer."
—Time Out New York

"On the other side of Aldous Huxley's brave new world is Carola Dibbell's braver one, all the more unsettling (and maybe even more profound) for being not five hundred years from now but five minutes, in a time at once beyond our control and too immediate to escape. Brilliantly conceived, passionately defiant, deeply felt, The Only Ones introduces — in the form of central character Inez Fardo — one of the most memorable and compelling first-person voices in recent American fiction."
—Steve Erickson

"A bracing, tough minded, farsighted novel about bravery and endurance, motherhood and the way life goes on even after the world ends. Every sentence pierces."
—Kelly Link

Inez wanders a post-pandemic world, strangely immune to disease, making her living by volunteering as a test subject. She is hired to provide genetic material to a grief-stricken, affluent mother, who lost all four of her daughters within four short weeks. This experimental genetic work is policed by a hazy network of governmental ethics committees, and threatened by the Knights of Life, religious zealots who raze the rural farms where much of this experimentation is done.

When the mother backs out at the last minute, Inez is left responsible for the product, which in this case is a baby girl, Ani. Inez must protect Ani, who is a scientific breakthrough, keeping her alive, dodging authorities and religious fanatics, and trying to provide Ani with the childhood that Inez never had, which means a stable home and an education.

With a stylish voice influenced by years of music writing, The Only Ones is a time-old story, tender and iconic, about how much we love our children, however they come, as well as a sly commentary on class, politics, and the complexities of reproductive technology.

Carola Dibbell is a highly regarded rock critic whose fiction has appeared in the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Fence, and Black Clock. Writing about books as well as music, Dibbell was a Village Voice contributor for many years. The Only Ones is her debut novel.

Had a hard time finishing it which never usually happens with any book I read
By KiwiLA
Yes, I didn't enjoy this book whatsoever. I'm probably the only one who thinks this as it is getting fantastic reviews and the book clubs are trending with it. I bought it as I enjoy the post apocalyptic/pandemic genre. Unfortunately I found it dull to read, the first person hip hop vernacular was constantly grating, the characters weren't fleshed out enough and the setting simply empty. There was no descriptive prose so you didn't know what the characters or their worlds looked like, nor the things in it. Like reading the inside of an empty tin can - rounded but empty.

Not easy to read but worth it
By L. Jackson
This was not an easy book to read; as other reviewers have pointed out, the first person narrator is at times irritating and there is not a whole lot of description of settings etc. However, those are the things that made it interesting to me; I had to make it come to life myself and it did.

Wonderfully Written Narrator; A Fascinating and Enriching Read
By D. Olda
Despite the future dystopic world of The Only Ones, there is something deeply familiar about much in the book. To be sure, issues addressed in the The Only Ones are timely and poignant. However, it’s the voice of the narrator Inez (or simply I) that made such a strong connection with me.
The world of The Only Ones seems perpetually stricken with one pandemic after another. Queens, New York, where Inez lives, is as decimated by sickness as the efforts to wipe it out. Inez is an anomaly, seemingly immune to every disease she encounters. In an effort to make a living she is drawn into shady genetic experimentation. Through a series of events she is unexpectedly left with an infant, a clone of herself, and must raise her.
Author Carola Dibbell conveys the constant anxieties of parenthood, of being poor, of physical objectification and general physical angst through Inez with such clarity it is almost uncomfortably familiar at times. The book is a fascinating read for issues such as ethics in cloning and genetics. But its enriching in the way it addresses poverty, motherhood, and more.

Identity and the Museum Visitor Experience, by John H Falk

Understanding the visitor experience provides essential insights into how museums can affect people’s lives. Personal drives, group identity, decision-making and meaning-making strategies, memory, and leisure preferences, all enter into the visitor experience, which extends far beyond the walls of the institution both in time and space. Drawing upon a career in studying museum visitors, renowned researcher John Falk attempts to create a predictive model of visitor experience, one that can help museum professionals better meet those visitors’ needs. He identifies five key types of visitors who attend museums and then defines the internal processes that drive them there over and over again. Through an understanding of how museums shape and reflect their personal and group identity, Falk is able to show not only how museums can increase their attendance and revenue, but also their meaningfulness to their constituents.

Review
John Falk’s determined focus on the visitor’s experience continues to transform our understanding of the relationship between museums and their audiences. Identity and the Museum Visitor Experience demonstrates that Falk remains the leading voice in the field of museum learning. For the first time he moves beyond theory and proposes a model that museums can use to explore how to serve their visitors in more meaningful ways. -Nannette V. Maciejunes, Columbus Museum of Art

John Falk's most exciting work reframes frustrating old questions in new ways that bring immediate clarity. In this important book, Falk shifts the old issue of visitor segmentation away from stable traits to ephemeral dispositions. His new formulation shows us visitors who actually seem to belong to the same species as ourselves, and whose differences relate to understandable differences in the ways that they perceive and use exhibitions. –Jay Rounds, E. Desmond Lee Professor of Museum Studies, University of Missouri St. Louis, and former editor of the Exhibitionist Journal

This book should be read by anyone serious about visitor experiences in museums. Falk reconceptualises the field from a wholistic perspective using the ‘lens’ of visitor identity and motivation. The model he proposes will shape and inform the nature, design and understanding of visitor experiences in free-choice learning environments. –Roy Ballantyne, University of Queensland, and editor of Visitor Studies Journal

A New Way of Looking at Visitors that Attend Museums
By Stephen A.
I was extremely impressed with Falk's book. In this book he talks about five museum visitor identities: Explorer, Facilitator, Experience Seeker, Professional/Hobbyist, and Recharger. Instead of thinking of general demographics of museum visitors, such as age, race, gender, etc., Falk recommends thinking of visitors in one of these five visitor identities. Doing so will help the museum better meet the needs of the community.

I currently work at a museum complex in Lehi, Utah called Thanksgiving Point, and I look forward to incorporating the ideas in Falk's book into our practices here. In doing so I hope to see not only an increase in revenue, but also an increase in the public's perceived value of our museum complex. I plan on conducting research to test many of the ideas presented in this book.

This book has caused me to rethink how I look at visitors that attend museums. It has shown me how I can more fully focus on their needs, instead of just thinking of the objectives of the museum. It is an excellent read for anyone in the museum field or anyone interested in free-choice learning in general.

good read for museum professionals/students
By Catalina Becerra
This book really helped me in my final paper for one of my classes. It was interesting to read how different people approach their experiences in a museum, as well as why they decide to go or not go.

Interesting insight into the museum visitor experience, though a bit too broad and theoretical. "Practical" part of the book (several last chapters) are particularly inspiring. Good examples of visitor interviews.

Correcting Margaret Mitchell
By Mrs. Olsen
I picked up this book with an open mind. I enjoy fanfiction and new takes on old favorites and never believe that any work is sacrosanct. GWTW from Rhett Butler's POV sounded fascinating, but that's not what this book is. It's not a retelling. It's not a sequel. It's not even--as I first thought--an attempt to whitewash the character of Rhett Butler. It is a correction of the flaws the author perceives to exist in the original.

Many other reviews mention the inconsistencies between this book and GWTW (to which this book must and should be compared), and it's important to consider these not just because it's a kind of cheating not to work within the framework of the source novel, but to consider why McCaig made the changes he did. For example, there is no mention of Scarlett's miscarriage. Why? Because it doesn't fit McCaig's image of Rhett Butler. Then McCaig's Rhett Butler is simply not Rhett Butler.

The Rhett Butler McCaig creates bears almost no resemblance to Mitchell's complex, cynical, wry observer. McCaig's Rhett is morose to the point of clinical depression and very nearly the embodiment of all manly virtues. He is friend to every man, black or white. This puts his character in conflict with the very foundation of the Confederacy. Does he believe in it or doesn't he? That might have been an interesting conflict to explore, but instead, McCaig simply leaves it there on the page, without explanation. Rhett loves and supports blacks on this page. On this page, he loves and supports the Confederacy. The end. McCaig expects you to accept Rhett as he tells you he is, rather than as he shows him.

This happens frequently as numerous characters refer to Rhett as a rakehell and a renegade, but this is never substantiated in the story itself. Just saying a character is a rakehell doesn't make him one when all you show him doing is mooning over the habits of loggerhead turtles, nobly supporting every helpless creature that crosses his path and having palpitations whenever Miss Scarlett smiles at him.

Yes, that's right. This Rhett is reduced to a lovesick schoolboy on first sight of Scarlett O'Hara and on every occasion thereafter. Gone are the sparkling scenes where he taunts and teases Scarlett, admiring her very worst qualities and loving her for them. Instead, the love scenes between this paragon of a Rhett and this confident, erudite and unrecognizable Scarlett are on the level of second-rate romantic bilgewater. ("Scarlett. Sunshine, hope and everything he ever wanted.")

Other scenes are referenced but skipped over and replaced with McCaig's inventions, again to facilitate his vision of Rhett. Instead of a scene where Rhett offers Scarlett a green silk hat from Paris to deliberately torment her false sense of propriety, knowing she will be torn between wanting to wear it and not wanting to expose herself by throwing off her widow's weeds, we get Rhett breathlessly offering Scarlett the yellow silk shawl she in turn makes into a sash for Ashley. Only this time, instead of the silk shawl being a minor symbol of Rhett's easy profligacy in a time of want and self-denial, McCaig constructs a ludicrously maudlin tale of the shawl having belonged to Rhett's adorable Bonnie-Blue-esque niece, who had been killed in the shelling of Charleston. Scarlett is somehow supposed to recognize what--in the original--Rhett obviously knew was a rather tacky and gaudy trifle--as the deepest offering of a devoted man's heart. When she fails to, she crushes the tenderest hopes of this noble creature.

There are occasions when he can't avoid retelling scenes from GWTW and that is frequently where he gets tangled up in the conflict between his Rhett and Mitchell's Rhett. A prime example is the flight from Atlanta, where he can't quite make the abandonment of Scarlett work for this lovesick, devoted, perfect Rhett, and so Rhett's motivation is lost in a murky jumble of the romantic uncertainties of a schoolboy. (She never really loved me. I might as well go to war.)

McCaig never comes close to matching Mitchell's voice, as perhaps he shouldn't. But since Mitchell's feminine story was written in a voice that was stringent and vigorous, it is odd to read this masculine story couched in overwrought, flowery prose ("The frosty Milkyway stretched across the heavens to the horizon where it drowned in the ruddy penumbra of guns.") I must also mention, as have others, the frequently disjointed quality of the writing. There are paragraphs made up of sentences that bear no relation to each other and conversations abruptly switch topics depending on what the author needs to have the characters say rather than the natural course of the conversation.

And this isn't even getting into the large sections of the book that are given over to characters that never appeared in GWTW. McCaig's own dear creations. In fact, a case could be made that McCaig sets up his Rosemary Butler as a new and improved Scarlett, giving her similar travails but a more womanly attitude and forebearance and awarding her the coveted prize in the end.

But the key problem in this tale of an alien Rhett and Scarlett isn't that McCaig is entitled to his interpretation. It's that McCaig had no taste for the original. He says as much in an interview in the New York Times, where he admits that he had never read GWTW when approached by St. Martin's to pen a "sequel." When he did finally read it, he pronounced everything but the Civil War bits as "Oh dear."

So then why write it at all? He admits to "four parts poverty" playing a role in his decision. But it's abundantly clear that he does not understand Mitchell's characters and what motivated them and with all the fundamental mistakes he makes, it is also clear that he does not care to. He is more interested in constructing his new, improved versions. It is impossible to read this book without feeling that this was his aim: to show how GWTW ought to have been written.

Oh my dear God.
By Cindy Hornsby
As MANY MANY have said before me, the book started out good. The "filling out" of Rhett's background made you understand how he could have turned into the sometimes hard and unbending man of Margaret Mitchell's imagination. I began reading the book with judgment held fully in reserve but then, like a snowball, the book began rolling downhill, gaining speed and weight at it went. Finally, when I closed the book, my jaw was hanging open, my eyebrows were even with my hairline and the only thing I could say was, "McCaig is an IDIOT!"

Until the last half of the novel, the only MAJOR problems I had was with McCaig's version of Melly. Melly, the constant in GWTW, who was naive, trusting, believing the best of all around her, shy, unconfident, unknowing and selfless to a fault. McCaig's Melly became a scheming woman who knew all about Ashley and Scarlett and made sure they were never alone. McCaig's Melly didn't trust Scarlett as far as she could throw her. McCaig's Melly became a woman who could write about lovemaking with Ashely in letters to Rosemary Butler. Not only would that NEVER have happened in the day and age Melly "lived" in, Mitchell's Melanie Hamilton Wilkes was no more able to put pen to page to write about sexual relations than she was able to commit adultery against Ashley. Not only did McCaig not understand one cell of Melly's character, he slandered it in the process of completing this joke of an "authorized sequel".

After choking down this horrible version of Melly for chapter after chapter, Rhett Butler started growing odd himself. The character the book was supposed to be about in the first place was twisted into some soft, depressed man who wouldn't be recognized by Mitchell or her followers. To top it all off, after all of the characters basically lost their minds, lives or personalities in the last few chapters, not only did McCaig burn Scarlett's tacky Atlanta house to the ground, he burned Tara. Tara.

He

burned

Tara.

Donald McCaig is an idiot. There are some things you don't do, even for money. Absolutely violating, raping and pillaging a classic and iconic piece of American Literature is one of them. As a writer himself, you would have thought he could figure that on his own. You would be wrong.

You Can't Go Home To Tara

No novel will ever be an adequate sequel to "Gone With The Wind," and no writer will ever "complete" Mitchell's story. "Gone With The Wind" is an American epic, the tale of the fall of a doomed civilization and the dissolution and reunification of the Union. Against that backdrop, Mitchell portrayed a passionate, tragic romance between two characters with whom readers themselves fall in love. No author will ever recapture the magic of the original, whether in a prequel, sequel, or "other story," because the novel is complete "as is." Like any work of fiction, the work ends where it ends. In the case of GWTW, the reader is left longing for answers, just as Scarlett longed for Ashley, Rhett longed for Scarlett, and, at the novel's conclusion, Scarlett schemes to win Rhett back.

Mitchell wrote with conviction and zeal, because the story was one that she knew well -- she'd grown up among people who had lived through and fought in the Civil War and then endured the humiliation and struggles of the Reconstruction period. Basically (the literary critics are going to kill me for this), GWTW is the American "War and Peace," and Scarlett O'Hara is our Natasha. We will never know what happens to Rhett and Scarlett, however, because Mitchell, a consummate storyteller, didn't choose tell us.

That said -- I am enjoying "Rhett Butler's People," because it's not a bad read and tells a story of its own. Those reviewers who are proclaiming that the book is "awful" are, I think, merely pining for the original. I recommend "Rhett Butler's People" to anyone who is not so attached to Mitchell's novel and characters that he or she can't put aside GWTW and take McCaig's book on its own terms. If you view McCaig, not as trying to complete GWTW, but rather as imagining -- as any author does -- what Rhett Butler's history might have been, this is an engaging novel with which to while away a winter's afternoon.

The talents Maxwell Perkins nurtured were known worldwide: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe among numerous others. But the man himself remained a mystery, a backstage presence who served these authors not only as editor but as critic, career manager, moneylender, psychoanalyst, confessor and friend. This outstanding biography, a winner of the National Book Award, is the first to explore the fascinating life of this editor extraordinaire in both professional and personal domains. It tells not only of Perkins' stormy marriage and secret twenty-five-year romance with Elizabeth Lemmon, but also of his intensely intimate relationships with the leading literary lights of the twentieth century.

Geometric Transformations III (New Mathematical Library), by I. M. Yaglom

This book is the sequel to Geometric Transfrmations I and II, volumes 8 and 21 in this series, but can be studied independently. It is devoted to the treatment of affine and projective transformations of the plane; these transformations include the congruences and similarities investigated in the previous volumes. The simple text and the many problems are designed mainly to show how the priniciples of affine and projective geometry may be used to furnish relatively simple solutions of large classes of problems in elementary geometry, including some straight edge construction problems. In the Supplement, the reader is introduced to hyperbolic geometry. The latter part of the book consists of detailed solutions of the problems posed throughout the text.

Problem solving for Olympians
By J. Bogaarts
The Yaglom geometric transformation books are aimed at a mathematical Olympiad audience. The books are not primarily about transformations, they are mainly about how to use transformations to solve problems. Yaglom wrote the book in Russian back in the fifties, presenting geometrical transformations techniques to geometric problem solving. He introduces transformation types and then shows how they can be used to solve problems that otherwise would sometimes be almost unsolvable using elementary (synthetic) methods. Then he presents a set of problems that vary from difficult to fiendish. Full solutions are provided, you will need them. The Russian book has chapters on congruence, similarity and projective transformations that are contained in the three English translations published by the MAA. It continues with sections on inversion transformations that are not (yet?) translated into English.

This is the third of three books, it presents projective transformations and how to use them to solve geometric problems in the euclidean domain. Although dealing with projective transformations it is definitely not a book on projective geometry. It does contain a section on non euclidean geometry but that deals mainly with hyperbolic geometry.

These are great books for problem solving.

A tale about Bootle the cat, who wakes up one morning and discovers he has lost his purr. Like all cats, he knows about wet fur days and dry fur days, but he is not very good at remembering when he last used his purr. But when he hears his two-legged unfurry friends have arrived home, he gets just what he is looking for. . .hugs and his purr! A 'big' paperback for ages 3 and up.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Bootle, a classic tabby cat, wakes up one morning to an empty house and finds that his purr is gone. He spends the rest of the day looking for the elusive noise in a number of interesting, but ultimately unproductive places, such as the toilet, the cupboard, the clock, and the washing machine. His purr at last surfaces with the reappearance of his family. A cat needs his ``. . . openers of cans . . . pourers of cream . . . strokers of fur . . .'' to be really content. Coxon's watercolor illustrations are lavish and detailed, making skillful use of white highlights and small brush strokes. Bootle certainly looks strokable, but the paintings are strongly reminiscent of calendar or greeting-card art, and the artist is much less at home with human faces (the boy looks a bit squashed) than she is with animals and plants (or even the interior of a refrigerator). The text occasionally relies on some too cute wordplay. Young listeners will probably not notice, however, and may enjoy this simple story of a perplexing day that ends well. --Ann Welton, Thomas Academy, Kent, WA

Boodle's in a Jam!
By A Customer
This delight, warm tale shall please adults and children alike. The lush, intricate illustrations feature the cat seeking his purr in different rooms. One hilarious panel depicts Boodle staring fixedly inside a toilet hoping the purr will pop back up, LOL.
The story itself unfolds neatly, is well paced for all its briefness, and includes a few cozy panels of young owner feeding his pet, holding an adoring Boodles in a headlock while doing homework.
Highly recommend this as gift to anyone who is amused by felines' antics, or for children.

Cute little book
By Kevin W. Parker
My wife set this tiny little book in front of me a while ago. It's an illustrated children's book about a cat who goes in search of his lost purr, making a total wreck of his house as he does so. Of course, his owner comes up, whereupon he immediately finds his purr. We gloss a bit over what the owner thought of the state of the house. Nice illustrations, particularly when the cat's looking goofy.

Marc Stevens' Government: Indicted, by Marc Stevens

Government: Indicted is an indictment of the concept of government itself, not any particular group of people calling themselves a government. G:I is in two parts: the indictment showing the psychological damage and economic damage caused by the concept; then an explicit model for dealing with and resolving attacks by bureaucrats from traffic to taxes to possessing the wrong type of plants.

Government: Indicted is over 450 pages of proof the concept of government is irrational and cannot be reformed. The "but for" principal is also used to prove this irrational concept is the direct cause of damage by those acting as government and their victims, the mass of humanity that complies with and enables them.

The model for resolving attacks has proven effective across political lines. Not only has the author helped get attacks dropped, but others have replicated the results in Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand. One can not only predict what will happen, one can replicate it. It’s more proof that approaching these attacks from a rational standpoint - just looking at the evidence and asking questions - is so effective. No law degree necessary.

An irrefutable indictment of the idea that government possesses any legitimate basis whatsoever
By Alexander
Do the constitutions, codes, and various government laws actually apply to anyone? Is there such a thing, factually, as the State? When bureaucrats compel us under threats of violence to answer their charges -- do they really have any standing?

The uncontestable answer to these questions is NO! Governments routinely use complete fictions, based on NO facts or evidence, in order to control and dominate us. And at the end of the day they have only guns and physical force...but NO evidence their laws actually apply.

If you're into truth -- wherever it may lead -- including a no window dressing look at the psychology and corruption of the bureaucrats inside EVERY legal system, police force, and tax agency, then get this book now! Then get another copy for a friend!

The State and Government Indicted
By Bill Buppert
Marc Stevens’ Government Indicted by Marc Stevens is also penned by a personal friend who I hold in the highest esteem, not only a fellow jazz spectator but a keen observer of the collectivist chaos that is Vichy Amerika. The book is a philosophically thick almost psychedelic trip through the power lens common to libertarian analysis.

What makes the libertarian commentariat so incisive and intellectually devastating in its examination of small and large problems alike is the notion that power hates a vacuum and no matter what the minarchist or collectivist nostrum to solve it, psychopaths rush in to fill the void.

Marc hosts a nationwide radio show where he takes on the court and legal system and takes the robed government employees to task. Marc has no law degree otherwise he would probably be a collectivist drone after that communard obedience vocational training called law school.

He asks the essential question: is the system arbitrary or based on facts? His answer is a categorical assertion that the entire system is a house of card built by psychopaths to allow one group of people to exist at the expense of others employing the intellectual fairy dust of American jurisprudence which he shows to be based on a foundation of shifting sand and fallacious premises.

Like James Bovard, he uses actual cases and painful anecdotes by the bushel to make the point that the American system is rigged against freedom and liberty. Marc’s primary task appears to be the destruction of the credibility of the state, particularly in America. One could contend he views the state as a psychopathic entity, which can’t help but cause destruction, it is built into the system’s DNA. This may account for the cyclical destruction of all nation states over time.

Marc’s solutions are too many to detail and most are relevant but I maintain a healthy skepticism that jury activism and using the legal system against itself will work its magic over time. I don’t accuse Marc of being a Sovereign but it skirt that lunatic territory closely and I remain unconvinced at its efficacy. The other solutions for de-legitimizing a psychopathic society to a free and voluntary society is compelling.

I recommend his book with the few reservations except for the editing difficulties. A few minor annoyances are typos and grammar mistakes, which can be easily remedied once this book comes out on Kindle much like I commented on Boston’s book. The electronic publishing and self-publishing industry is a revolutionary event for liberty oriented authors because the collectivist gatekeepers at the traditional publishing houses can no longer block the dissemination of ideas injurious to the prison sates dotting the globe, including America.
