Great, handy guide
By Moonbeam
This is a great guide for more than just the game industry. Many local business dreamers can become business owners by taking the framework of this book and applying the concepts to your chosen industry. Books/comics, games, hair products, etc...All can learn about planning, marketing, operations, building a competitive analysis and more. The only thing that wouldn't apply to an alternate business is specific gaming related products and resources, which can easily be translated to other businesses.

A great guide to what can be a tricky business.
By George K Pettway
Both general and specific advice on avoiding the pitfalls of the gaming business, as well as strategies for excellence. I can't imagine that a new game-store owner wouldn't find this book invaluable, but an old dog in the biz could learn a few tricks as well.

Mr. Brown writes in a straightforward, easy-to-understand style that is not at all off-putting, despite the occasionally (and necessarily) technical aspect of some of the subjects he covers. I unreservedly recommend the Game Retailer Guide to anyone with an interest.

Straightforward, All-Inclusive, Easy-To-Understand
By Bob Olson
As editor of OfSpirit.com Magazine, I've reviewed countless books on psychic development. There are three things I especially like about Psychic Navigator.

ONE, I enjoy the author's writing voice. Holland communicates with his readers like he is chatting with you on the phone. He's straightforward and precise. He doesn't try to write fancy and flowery. So I connected with the book because of the down-to-earth, unintimidating explanations.

TWO, the author teaches you "everything" you need to know to harness your inner-guidance. While it might be surprising to some, Psychic Navigator explains how our psychic strengths can be kicked into gear using specific breathing and meditation techniques. While I've never been that interested in practicing either, Holland inspired me to integrate both in my life. And by adding easy-to-understand chapters on auras, chakras, psychometry and energy scanning, I think every reader will finish reading with a more well-rounded comprehension of how our psychic abilities work and how to use this inborn gift (that we all have) in our lives.

And, finally, THREE, the CD that comes in the back of the book really puts it all together. It allows you to utilize what you've just been taught to really feel like Holland has given you a personal lesson--with his Dorchester, Massachusetts accent and all.

I highly recommend this book.

The CD Alone Is Worth The Price!
By Kathy Dannel Vitcak
I have to start with this...I absolutely LOVED this book, but the CD is AMAZING! I admit, I am a bit of a collector when it comes to different meditation CDs and programs, but this CD is one of the best I own. The book is very well done, laid out beautifully and has a very pleasing usage of photography to accent what is being said. But the CD is what blew me away. For the last three months, since I got the CD, I have listened to one and on occasion both of the tracks every single day! The 20 minute one is the perfect length to start your day off beautifully - grounded and prepared to meet the world. John's sincerity just palpates through the audio, you can just feel how much he loves his work! The CD has not been removed from my little bedside CD player and every morning before I get out of bed I just pop on my headphones and start my day with John! I urge you to just click and buy this item. I cannot imagine you will be disappointed!

So You Want to Develop Your Sixth Sense?
By Bonnie Neely
Psychic Navigator - Harnessing Your Inner Guidance by John Holland is a lovely little book written by a man who had Sixth Sense from his early years but was afraid to talk about what he could sense or "see." As an adult he found a teacher who could help him learn to develop his extrasensory perceptions and use them confidently to help other people. Now John helps people further by encouraging and teaching readers how to develop this latent ability which we all possess. With easy to follow instructions he teaches "the mechanics of psychic awareness, the benefits of meditation, the vital power of breath, and the workings and functions of your chakras and aura." By practicing each of the lessons in this little book, you can learn quickly and easily to trust the "feelings" we all have experienced and to develop your ability to enhance your own perceptions. An excellent and easy to follow guide, which will greatly enhance your spiritual experiences no matter what Faith you proclaim. The book comes with a guided meditation CD which includes "Healing Relaxation for Body and Mind" and "Raising the Power," a guide for learning to open and close your psychic receptors and raise your energy." It is fascinating to experience the new levels of awareness and to incorporate them into your life with practice.

O City of Byzantium: Annals of Niketas Choniates (Byzantine Texts in Translation), by Nicetas Choniates, Niketas Choniates

O City of Byzantium is the first English translation of a history which chronicles the period of Byzantine history from 1118 to 1207. The historian Niketas Choniates provides an eye-witness account of the inexorable events that led to the destruction of the longest lived Christian empire in history, and to the ultimate catastrophe of the fall of Constantinople in 1204 to the Fourth Crusade. For the student of the Middles Ages who cannot read Greek, and for the historians and the general public, this volume contains one of the most important historical accounts of the Middle Ages. Recorded in detail are the political, economic, social, and religious causes of alienation between the Latin West and the Greek East that separated the two halves of the Christian world and broke apart the great bulwark of European civilization.

Expensive but worth it
By art
Nothing like reading a contemporary historian who loves to belittle every single emperor. Choniates is a whole different kinda animal he gives you the information on emperors who put him in power and those who put him out but none the less he seems to stick to the facts most of the way. He isn't bogged down by this whole right to rule of the west he just speaks of the emperors and their ability to rule. Which unfortunately leading up to the 4th crusade wasn't all that grand

a short review
By Demetrios Vakras
Choniates' account is the Byzantine record of the years up to, and including, the sack of Byzantium in the so-called "fourth crusade".

I BOUGHT my copy directly from WAYNE UNIVERSITY PRESS ( re: wsupress.wayne.edu I searched for "city of byzantium" on their site). It cost USD$79.95 a lot less than the USD$699- ++ that opportunistic sellers on Amazon are selling their copies for.

Choniates dissects the Byzantine state and the events within the state that led to the successful sack of Byzantium in the so-called "fourth crusade" by the "crusaders". The affairs of the Byzantine state had pretty much imploded some 20 years prior to the sack. Choniates' account makes it clear that the rot set in with the usurper Andronikos ... his reign is certainly not pretty: (ie, Andronikos murders the 15 year old legitimate emperor, Alexios, and then takes Alexios' wife, Anna, daughter of Louis VII, king of France, aged 11 as his wife). My personal interest in this book lies in Choniates' account of a Byzantium in which survived the achievements of classical antiquity: literature, building and engineering, art and sculpture.

This is a city in which the Greek pagan past was still intact. Contrary to the claims made that the classical past had been dismantled & destroyed by christianity many centuries earlier, we find in Byzantium, that the statues of pagan gods and heroes - the very examples of a pagan past - were still extant in 1204.

The statue of Athena which had graced the parthenon (Athens) had been relocated to Byzantium centuries earlier. She was still there in 1204, with her gorgoneion, protective snake, etc (unlike the serpent in judaic literature, the snake was worshipped by the pagan greeks). The statue of Athena was destroyed by the Byzantines themselves (& not by the "crusaders") in this instance. (The Byzantines believed that she was calling the "crusaders" because her hand pointed to the west). The description of her by Choniates brought tears to my eyes at least.

The survival of antique knowledge, science, technology, art, literature, poetry & philosophy had survived in Byzantium despite christianity... (& its preservation had nothing to do with the Arabs who have been credited in doing so by the catholic west - the very destroyers in 1204).

An Impressive and Vivid Medieval Chronicle
By JefferGray@aol.com
This is one of the finest histories to come out of medieval Byzantium, and deserves a place on a medieval history buff's bookshelf along with the better-known works of Procopius, Psellus, and Anna Comnena. It is an astonishing medieval history - vivid, comprehensive, and generally fair-minded.
Choniates described a dramatic period -- the years 1120-1207, which includes the blood-soaked end of the Comneni dynasty and the catastrophic Fourth Crusade -- and he describes it in memorable and telling detail. Choniates was a lawyer and court official who served the Emperor Isaac II Angelus. He was an astute student of politics, a scholar who deeply revered the Empire's classical heritage, and a deeply honorable and courageous man (who resigned from his position at court rather than serve the usurper Andronicus Comnenus, for example). Choniates's classical education is responsible for both one of the book's most delightful aspects, and also for one of its principal faults: he attempts to imitate Homer by frequently tossing off poetically illustrative similies. When these work, they are delightfully vivid, as when he notes that "the protosebastos [Alexius Comnenus] clung to the palace apartments like an octopus clamping its suckers on a rock", or or when he sums up the Emperor Isaac II's indecisiveness by observing that he "acted out of caprice and was subject to sudden changes like the backward flow of the straits at Aulis", or when he notes that the Emperor Alexius III was so ignorant that he "knew no more, in fact, of what was going on in the Roman Empire than did the inhabitants of ultima Thule." However, sometimes he strains for effect and the result falls flat. In general, however, he has a far better feel for memorable or colorful details than do most medieval historians, as when he describes the end of the unsuccessful marriage between the Serbian prince Stefan Nemanja and Princess Eudocia of Byzantium: the prince accused his wife of adultery, "stripped her of her woman's robe, leaving her with only her undergarment, which was cut round so that it barely covered her private parts, and dismissed her thus in disgrace to go forth as a wanton".
Choniates generally at least makes an effort to be fair to everyone he describes, but he knew almost all of the key players described in the last 25 years his book covers, and his personal grudges occasionally show. He was deeply shocked at the wanton destruction wrought by the Latin Crusaders who seized Constantinople in 1204; this edition includes his celebrated description of the statues destroyed by the Fourth Crusade.

In 1988 Mike was selected as the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science and in 1993, the Outstanding Researcher. In 2001 he received the SIUC Outstanding Scholar Award. In 2003 he received the Carski Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching from the American Society for Microbiology, and he is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Mike’s research is focused on bacteria that inhabit extreme environments, and for the past 15 years he has studied Antarctic microbiology. In addition to research papers, he has edited a major treatise on phototrophic bacteria and served for 10 years as chief editor of the journal Archives of Microbiology. He currently serves on the editorial board of the journals Environmental Microbiology and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Mike’s nonscientific interests include forestry, reading, and caring for his dogs and horses. He lives on a quiet lake with his wife, Nancy, four shelter dogs (Gaino, Pepto, Peanut, and Merry), and three horses (Eddie, Gwen, and Festus).

John M. Martinko received his B.S. in Biology from The Cleveland State University. He then worked at Case Western Reserve University, conducting research on the serology and epidemiology of Streptococcus pyogenes. His doctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo investigated antibody specificity and antibody idiotypes. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York on the structure of major histocompatibility complex proteins. Since 1981, he has been in the Department of Microbiology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he was Associate Professor and Chair, and Director of the Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry Graduate Program. His research interests centered on the structure- function relationships of immune system proteins, including immunoglobulins, T cell receptors, and major histocompatibility proteins. His teaching interests include an advanced course in immunology as well as immunology and inflammation instruction to medical students. For his educational efforts, he won the 2007 Southern Illinois University Outstanding Teaching Award. He has been active in a number of educational outreach programs for pre-university students and teachers. He has also been a faculty member at Bard College in their innovative Citizen Science program, an interactive laboratory, computer and problem-based-learning science curriculum that introduces freshmen students to critical thinking through the discovery and application of scientific principles. He was the Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at SIUC and continues to act as a consultant in the area of animal care. He is also an avid golfer and cyclist. John lives in Carbondale with his wife Judy, a high school science teacher.

Kelly S. Bender received her B.S. in Biology from Southeast Missouri State University (1999) and her Ph.D. (2003) in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale.  Her dissertation work focused on the genetics of perchlorate-reducing bacteria. During her post-doctoral fellowship, Kelly worked on the genetic regulation of sulfate-reducing bacteria in the laboratory of Judy Wall at the University of Missouri–Columbia.  She also completed a transatlantic biotechnology fellowship at Uppsala University in Sweden researching regulatory small RNAs in bacteria.  In 2006, Kelly returned to her alma mater, Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. Her lab studies a range of topics including the regulation of stress responses by small RNAs, microbial community dynamics of sites impacted by acid mine drainage, and the bioremediation of uranium by metal- and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Kelly teaches courses in microbial genetics and molecular biology, has served on numerous federal grant review panels, and is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology. Her other interests include biking, cooking, and spending time with family, friends, and her miniature schnauzer, Pepper.

Daniel H. Buckley is an Associate Professor at Cornell University in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. He earned his B.S. in Microbiology (1994) at the University of Rochester and his Ph.D. in Microbiology (2000) at Michigan State University. His graduate research focused on the ecology of soil microbial communities and was conducted in the laboratory of Thomas M. Schmidt in affiliation with the Center for Microbial Ecology. Dan's postdoctoral research examined linkages between microbial diversity and biogeochemistry in marine microbial mats and stromatolites and was conducted in the laboratory of Pieter T. Visscher at the University of Connecticut. Dan joined the Cornell faculty in 2003. His research program investigates the ecology and evolution of microbial communities in soils with a focus on the causes and consequences of microbial diversity. Lots on microbes before getting to medical implications
By DNAunion
The first thing I like about the text is that it has a lot of chapters devoted to microbes before getting to the medical microbiology parts. I have one other microbiology text and it basically pays lip service to microbes across a few chapters and then spends the rest of the book talking about what diseases various microbes produce. There is nothing wrong with that if you are interested primarily in the medical aspects of microbiology, but what if you are interested in microbiology for the sake of microbiology itself? You get shortchanged. But this text has chapter after chapter covering microbes, in detail, before getting into the chapters devoted to medical implications.

The second thing I like about the text is that I keep finding interesting tidbits of information: things you don't usually get from reading molecular cell biology texts and other biology texts. Things such as, the largest individuals of the bacterial species Thiomargarita namibiensis have a diameter of about 750 micrometers, making it about 5 times the size of a typical paramecium; Archaea do not have fatty acids in the membrane lipids; some Archaea have a monolayer instead of a phospholipid bilayer; many Archaeal lipids contain rings in the hydrocarbon chains; some prokaryotes have membrane-bounded (but monolayer) inclusions such as magnetosomes, PHAs, and sulfur granules; heterocystous cyanobacteria have a differentiated cell called a heterocyst where nitrogenase is protected from oxygen; some plasmids are linear; even though E. coli can double in population size in 20 minutes it take 40 minutes to replicate the chromosome; and so on.

The Entrepreneurial State: Debunking Public vs. Private Sector Myths (Anthem Other Canon Economics), by Mariana Mazzucato

This bestseller from leading economist Mariana Mazzucato named by the New Republic as one of the most important innovation thinkers today is stirring up much-needed debates worldwide about the role of the State in innovation. Debunking the myth of a laggard State at odds with a dynamic private sector, Mazzucato reveals in case study after case study that in fact the opposite situation is true, with the private sector only finding the courage to invest after the entrepreneurial State has made the high-risk investments. Case studies include examples of the States role in the green revolution, in biotech and pharmaceuticals, as well as several detailed examples from Silicon Valley. In an intensely researched chapter, she reveals that every technology that makes the iPhone so smart was government funded: the Internet, GPS, its touch-screen display and the voice-activated Siri. Mazzucato also controversially argues that in the history of modern capitalism the State has not only fixed market failures, but has also shaped and created markets, paving the way for new technologies and sectors that the private sector only ventures into once the initial risk has been assumed. And yet by not admitting the States role we are socializing only the risks, while privatizing the rewards in fewer hands. This, she argues, hurts both future innovation and equity in modern-day capitalism. Named one of the 2013 Books of the Year by the Financial Times and recommended by Forbes in its 2013 creative leaders list, this book is a must-read for those interested in a refreshing and long-awaited take on the public vs. private sector debate.

Conventional economics offers abstract models; conventional wisdom insists that the answer lies with private entrepreneurship. In this brilliant book, Mariana Mazzucato [] argues that the former is useless and the latter incomplete. Martin Wolf, Financial Times

[A] meticulously argued treatise that shows how unwise our conventional wisdom has become. Christopher Dickey, Newsweek

[] This important book should be read by policymakers, opinion leaders, and others with a stake in funding economic growth. ' Arnold T. Davis, CFA Institute book review

Makes and engaging, persuasive case in favor of the state, and suggests one recommend it not just as an instrument of market repair but also as a prerequisite for future prosperity. J. Bhattacharya, Choice

Review

This is a book whose time has come. Mariana Mazzucato documents how the state played a crucial role behind some of the landmark innovations of our time. For many, the entrepreneurial state is a contradiction in terms. For Mazzucato, it is both a reality and a requirement for future prosperity. Dani Rodrik, Rafiq Hariri Professor of International Political Economy, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

The principal entrepreneurial drive that has given us many of todays most important technologies has come from the state. Most thinking and arguing regarding how to energize our sluggish economies is blind to this fact. Mariana Mazzucatos book aims to get us to understand better the sources of entrepreneurship, and to reflect more positively on the role aggressive technology policies can play in getting our economies moving again. Richard Nelson, George Blumenthal Professor of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University

The Entrepreneurial State delivers a well-researched and elegantly (even entertainingly) written knock-out to the belief across most of the political spectrum and the economics profession that (with some qualifications) the market knows best. As many governments wonder how to boost the productivity and innovativeness of their industrial sectors, this book provides guidelines based on successful and unsuccessful cases on how to do industrial policy well. Above all, it shows why the common presumption that the state crowds out the private sector as though the private sector is a lion caged by a smothering state is contradicted by what governments of economies from the United States to Brazil and China actually do to crowd in innovations in the private sector. Robert Wade, Professor of Political Economy and Development, London School of Economics

Turning Uncertainty into Risk
By R. Albin
This concise and somewhat polemical book is successful effort to argue for a relatively large role for state intervention in fostering economic growth. Mazzucato points to the substantial role of state-led interventions in the development of important techologies. Her analysis goes well beyond the usual discussion of DARPA and the Internet to discuss a broad array of important technologies fostered by the state, particularly the US Federal government. Who knew, for example, that Apple had an SBIR grant in its early years or that Google's original algorithm development was assisted by an NSF grant. Mazzucato lays out the many ways in which Federal and sometimes US state patronage contributed substantially to the development of important, novel technologies. A key point is that these successful efforts go well beyond routine R&D support, tax credits, and educational efforts to active participation at many levels to translating research into successful products. Mazzucato is quite critical, and successfully so, of conventional views of the roles of venture capital and our financial system in general. She captures this quite nicely by describing the role of the state as dealing with Frank Knight's famous concept of uncertainty - only the state can make the sustained investments and create the market environment for novel technologies - in the essentially unpredictable world of science and technology. Only when uncertainty has been transformed into calculable Knightian risk will conventional market mechanisms assist the development of new technologies.

This is very well done but will be familiar to almost anyone with a modest knowledge of the history of technology development in the 20th century. A more novel and very interesting aspect of Mazzucato's argument is her sustained criticism of venture capital and general corporate finance policies in relation to technological innovations. This is an effective critique discussing the general theme of public risk and private profits. She also makes a credible argument that the public should get a better return for its tax supported investments in novel technologies, something that could expand the development of new technologies and foster growth.

Minor defects of this book are over-reliance on technical language common among economists and a couple of unclear arguments related to some of the more technical aspects of economics, notably the critique of conventional growth theory. Strongly recommended.

The Entrepreneurial State by Mariana Mazzucato, review by Mahee Ferlini
By Mahee Ferlini
Interesting analysis on how the state can contribute to long term economic growth especially through investment in research. I found it in line with some of the seminal contributions of Ken Arrow, Dick Nelson, and Keith Pavitt, among the others. However, I would have expected a deeper exploration of the conditions and the rules that can increase productivity and positive externalities of public investment. Moreover, as shown by the cases of Silicon Valley and Cambridge Ma., the US public research system has properties that other national systems of innovation were not able to replicate. So, I would have expected more emphasis on the interplay between competitive, mission oriented, public investment and vibrant market driven innovation dynamics. A good reading in any case. The state as an essential partner in innovation
By laurens van den muyzenberg
This well researched book proves that most important innovations are based on financing from government. Apple's iPods, iPhones and iPads are presented as one of the examples. The author describes in detail how the government has financed all essential technological innovations used. The author recognizes the genius of Steve Jobs by visualizing an attractive product that people would buy, selecting technologies, and putting them together in a compact beautiful package.

At first sight this appears the way it should be. The government finances technological breakthroughs that are picked up by business. The problem she sees is financing by the government. Governments are pressured to reduce costs and furthermore are accused to be highly inefficient in everything they do. She describes how for example the governments the US, Germany and Denmark invest heavily and effectively in research and development. They act as entrepreneurs taking the highest risks.

She shows that businesses, in the medical electronic and other fields have radically reduced their funding of the more longer term research and development on which breakthroughs depend. Business and venture capitalists are short term orientated. When "innovative" companies are hugely profitable they buy back shares and/or raise dividends but do not invest it in the longer-term future. She presents a lot of statistics to prove this point.

She considers that it is very important for the people at large to recognize the essential role government plays as the fundamental force in innovation. This role goes beyond developing new knowledge. The state in many cases also has to finance the development of a new technology to the point where it is applied and achieve critical mass. The governments is involved in the supply side but in important cases also on the demand side. The government chooses, has to choose, the winners.

The United States is by far the most effective and largest investor in innovation. Many people believe that the free market and entrepreneurs are the driving force in innovation. She refers to this as a "myth" presenting many examples.

Companies in general but especially highly profitable global companies go out of their way to reduce their taxes. Statistics show that these global companies are highly successful on this point. The tax income in addition to being reduced is also not going to the countries that have financed the new technologies that played an important role in generating the profits. She believes it is naive to believe that national governments can enforce tax regulations on global companies and therefore proposes other solutions.

One suggestion is to attach a royalty obligation to a technological innovation. The first buyer, as the public at large financed the innovation, should after a few years of exclusive rights, license other companies to use the innovation. She also refers to government financed development banks that provide financing for the early sages of development. A good example is such a bank in Germany the KfW (www.KFW.de).

She considers the present system as "dysfunctional", where governments take the highest risks and businesses take all the profits being an example where risks are socialized and the profits privatized.

I have worked extensively in this field, both in business and for government. I found this book stimulating to read and recommend it to others. I am however not sure, to what extent, the suggestions can be implemented. I do not doubt the importance and essential role the government plays in financing R&D. That kind of financing and managing, early stage innovation even including the creation of demand can also be seen as a logical task of government. I do agree that it is important that people at large should become more aware of the entrepreneurial role of government in innovation, and the necessity to organize and finance it.
