Paperback Version listed is International Version NOT Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition)
By Virginia Lyle
The paperback version of this book is the international version. It is not the same version as Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition) and in my opinion should not be listed on the same page for purchasing. If you are purchasing this book for a class based out of the USA the page numbers will NOT match up and possibly even more differences. It is only $10-20 more for the hardcover edition, save yourself some heartache and spend the money for the correct edition. There is no paperback version of Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition).

My 3 stars is for the listing not the book. Book is great.

Years pass and still this gleams
By ThatUmbrellaGuy
There are a few things about this book that should be said right away. First, this is not really an introductory book to ABA, but works as a book that ties so many theories together. That means that it could be used in conjunction with many starter ABA books, allowing its reader to get a feel of just what ABA means. The book also works on both a Masters and a PhD level when it comes to conceptual decision/ debate (an oddity if I do say so myself), and covers so many things that cheaper guides seem to omit. This could mean bypassing some causal arena or not talking about something as simple as the C.A.R.R., but these tiny slips are really not so tiny when you think about them.

There are plenty of great things listed about this book in other reviews, so I'll skip the addition of chapter content and the addition of material and its praise. Instead, I'll add that this is one of the few books that can make or break you when it comes to trying to get licensure. In fact, this book has been listed as one of the top 10 preparation guides to use before testing, and that is some high praise considering how vaunted the test actually is. More than this, however, is the fact that this is a tool that can help you in real life scenarios and, truthfully, that is more important than being able to simply pass tests. In samples as heterogeneous as those seen in autism, you really need to know how to handle multiple scenarios to make a difference.

If you are looking for a navigation tool to help with the rocky waters of autism, this is a great book to acquire. It may have a price tag attached, but it proves invaluable in the long run and that matters more than anything.
Recommended for the student in all of us.

Excellent resource on ABA
By Donald A. Robertson
I just received my copy of Applied Behaviour Analysis Second Edition today and have not put it down for several hours. I work as an ABA therapist and I am convinced that this is a learning and reference tool I will use for a long time to come to help me be better at what I do. It is very straight forward and well put together. The references to the Board Certification Task list content are excellent and the new additional chapters on Verbal Behaviour, Ethics, Motivation, Negative Reinforcement and Functional Behaviour Assessment are a real asset and make having the second edition well worth the wait. The textbook really covers a huge amount of information and is well well worth the purchase.

It's Shakespeare; who are we to critique the writing?

Although it's been more than 40 years since I graduated with a degree in English and I've retired from a non-literary career in government, I still read Shakespeare on a regular basis. I'm updating my collection with volumes that will fit into my backpack for travel. This edition meets my needs perfectly.

Kindle editions of classics like this need to up their game
By Nule
Kindle editions of classics like this need to up their game. This isn't the worst one I've bought (out of convenience), but it compares poorly to any paper edition. Buy it with reluctance.

Love this play!!!

This was the perfect companion to help me with scene work. As an actor who has done little Shakespeare, this was a handy go-to reference to help clear up uncertainty in a scene.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!
By Alexis Clemons
I love the use of the simplified yet descriptive language. I needed this book for a play therapy course, and it has opened up my mind to an assortment of wonder, insight, and information. While reading, I could feel the author's passion for children and play therapy. I found the ENTIRE book to be useful. I like that it is written from a humanistic, child-centered orientation. I think that this book, along with Virginia M. Axline's 1947 "Play Therapy", are essentials to any person that is trying to learn the basics of play therapy.

Great Intro to Play Therapy
By Peace & Love
I read this book for an intro to play therapy course I took. It was a great introduction to the field. It is clear that Landreth has lots of experience and is passionate about play therapy. He did a great job informing me, a new counselor, how to use play therapy effectively and tips for some of the more common problems in the play room. I gave it four stars, instead of 5, because at times it felt really repetitive.

Good Content, Too Wordy
By A. Jones
Wordy. That's what I would call this book. The content seems good. The practice problems are managable. Covers large amount of material. A one semester college course could expect to cover about a third of it.

Review
...a wise, powerfully argued work filled with vivid insights into the history of gay and lesbian liberation and containing a host of shrewd suggestions for its future. -- Martin Duberman, author of Stonewall

Vaid doesn't preach to the choir -- or to anyone else, for that matter; she simply offers her own findings in a voice that rings with conscience and common sense. This is the best book yet about that unwieldy glacier we call The Movement. -- Armistead Maupin, author of Tales of the City

From the Publisher
"Since gays in the military, the emergence of gay conservatives, and the onslaught of anti-gay initiatives across America, the gay and lesbian community has been asking itself tough questions: Where should the movement go? What do we want? How should we accomplish our goals? In Virtual Equality, veteran activist Urvashi Vaid answers thses questions with a unique combination of visionary politics and hard-earned pragmatism.

Tracing the political and cultural developments since Stonewall, Baid shows that despite significant gains in visibility, most gays and lesbians remain demoralized and persecuted, second-class citizens in their own country. Vaid defines the status of gay America as one of "virtual equality," a state of conditional equality based more upon the appearance of acceptance by straight America, rather than on actual civil equality. Virtual equality grants gays access to power, but no real power; visibility, but no security from violence and discrimination; and tax bills, coupled with "no promo homo" bills, that outlaw any attempts to "promote homosexuality."

With passionate arguments and vivid anecdotes, Vaid reasons that the struggle between legitimation ("gays are the same as straights") and liberation ("gay difference can change the world") has roadblocked the gay community for generations, and that while AIDS galvanized the movement temporarily, he challenges the gay community to wake up and face the forces that divide it and to consider what gays and lesbians stand for, as individuals and as people.

Guided by a moral vision yet grounded by realpolitik, Virtual Equality is a call to arms for the gay and lesbian community to begin the work necessary to achieve genuine equality with the rest of America.

"In this thoughtful and noble book, one of our great leaders struggles to find answers about where we're going and how we get there. It's both a heartbreaking book a nd a hopeful one, as Vaid makes us realize the journey to gay and lesbian equality is a long and painful one and that it's a journey that must be taken by all of us. Both that journey and this book are a must." -- Larry Kramer

"Urvashi Vaid brings hard-earned wisdom to this ferociously ambitious work. Vaid doesn't preach to the choir -- or to anyone else, for that matter; she simply offers her own findings in a voice that rings with conscience and common sense. This is the best book yet about that unwieldy glacier we call The Movement." -- Armistead Maupin, author of Tales Of The City

"Integration versus transformation: this is a daily choice for every social justice movement. In Virtual Equality, Urvashi Vaid is both fair to the diversity within the gay and lesbian movement, and passionate in her advocacy of transformation. Indespensable." -- Gloria Steinam

"Vaid is a reniassance woman whose scholarship is exceeded only by her practicality. Most importantly, for where she wants to go, she is not afraid to confront the enemy from within while keeping every battle in context and focus. Hers is the stuff of realpolitik." -- Mary Matalin, Republican strategist

Memoir, critique, manifesto
By Steve Sanders
Vaid, an activist, lawyer, and former head of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, provides an ambitious and richly detailed analysis that is equal parts memoir, critique, and manifesto. For Vaid, the "mainstreaming" of the gay rights movement hasn't been a good thing. She questions how much the prevailing paradigm of gay political activism -- the seeking of legal rights and protections by working within the traditional political and judicial systems -- has actually achieved. Vaid worries that the movement will be co-opted by money and a desire for "insider" access. She argues passionately that gays and lesbians, as well as other sexual minorities, must work in coalition with other progressive groups to "supplement the limited politics of civil rights with a broader and more inclusive commitment to cultural transformation."
Vaid's style tends to be chatty and the chapters a little long-winded, though she is always sincere. Her book will resonate most with academic/queer/left types who are persuaded that gays and lesbians form a distinctive subculture in search of "liberation," a subculture united not merely by sexual expression but also by shared sensibilities, political outlook, and experience of oppression. It will be less impressive to those who believe gays should (or already do) exist largely in the mainstream, or to those who suspect that writers like Vaid talk the language of radical democracy while prescribing a specific political and cultural agenda. (Readers in search of lively debate can read Vaid as counterpoint or antidote to the work of Bruce Bawer and Andrew Sullivan, or vice versa.) While I find Vaid's perspective fundamentally limited because it's grounded in the sort of old-style, two-coasts, radical-chic queer politics that's rapidly being driven out of business by the burgeoning, sophisticated, upper-middle-class movement being built by the Human Rights Campaign (exactly, as it turns out, what Vaid feared; think of her as your pioneering little local bohemian co-op up against the Pottery Barn of gay politics), and while the content is getting somewhat dated, this remains a useful, thoughtful, and important book on its own terms.

virtual equality
By amy tindal
this book is the most honest, inspiring, bold detailing of the gay and lesbian movement's successes and failures. vaid never tiptoes around sensitive or controversial topics, even her own actions. not only does she offer her well-researched, expert critique, but she also provides challenging, intelligent alternative/revised suggestions to improve the current strategy/ies. she makes the crucial point that many people don't want to face: ACCESS DOES NOT EQUAL PROGRESS. gains within legal and political arenas are very beneficial, but if we stop here then the absurd socio-cultural construct deeming queers (and all marginalized groups) inferior, which is the very root of discrimination, goes unscathed. bottom line....for anyone believing in the inherent equality of human beings on every level--cultural, social, political, economic, etc., it is absolutely essential to diligently study this book. Urvashi Vaid is an amazing person who has immersed her life in the battle for the liberation of the disenfranchised. her brilliance, effort and honesty are undeniable within this unabashed, uncloseted book.

Time proved Urv right
By Marla R. Stevens
If, like Rex Wockner recently did, you find yourself struck with the sudden realization that we aren't quite as well situated with the American public as the popularity of Will and Grace might lead one to believe and that, in the secrecy of the voting booth, the real anti-gay America is raising its ugly head past that glossy veneer of tolerance in state after state, you should read this book that a decade ago warned us against being content with simple mainstreaming into a corrupt social structure that had all the cornerstones of homohatred as its foundation and encouraged us to seek real equality instead of settling for a virtual one.

It's not a particularly easy read but you should distrust anyone who gives you easy answers to a problem so multi-layered and complex or who lets you off the hook of personal growth in the process. Urv does neither.

She knows whereof she speaks, having learned it all in the trenches. And it's as applicable to the middle-class and the Midwest as anyone and anywhere in the U.S.A. -- perhaps more so as this is a book for those who are willing to face the monster head-on instead of adapting to either accommodate the monster or become the monster themselves. Nowhere is that head-on fight more pressing than in the states facing MIPAs (Marriage Inequality Protection Amendments) and DenialOMAs -- typically the southern and midwestern (and, like Oregon, New England-Midwestern extension) states. Thus nowhere is a sound foundation in the political understanding available in this watershed book more valuable.

Urv, in short, not only 'keeps her eyes on the prize', she's astute enough to know what the prize really is.

The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel, by Barbara Kingsolver

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Amazon.com Review
Oprah Book Club® Selection, June 2000: As any reader of The Mosquito Coast knows, men who drag their families to far-off climes in pursuit of an Idea seldom come to any good, while those familiar with At Play in the Fields of the Lord or Kalimantaan understand that the minute a missionary sets foot on the fictional stage, all hell is about to break loose. So when Barbara Kingsolver sends missionary Nathan Price along with his wife and four daughters off to Africa in The Poisonwood Bible, you can be sure that salvation is the one thing they're not likely to find. The year is 1959 and the place is the Belgian Congo. Nathan, a Baptist preacher, has come to spread the Word in a remote village reachable only by airplane. To say that he and his family are woefully unprepared would be an understatement: "We came from Bethlehem, Georgia, bearing Betty Crocker cake mixes into the jungle," says Leah, one of Nathan's daughters. But of course it isn't long before they discover that the tremendous humidity has rendered the mixes unusable, their clothes are unsuitable, and they've arrived in the middle of political upheaval as the Congolese seek to wrest independence from Belgium. In addition to poisonous snakes, dangerous animals, and the hostility of the villagers to Nathan's fiery take-no-prisoners brand of Christianity, there are also rebels in the jungle and the threat of war in the air. Could things get any worse?

In fact they can and they do. The first part of The Poisonwood Bible revolves around Nathan's intransigent, bullying personality and his effect on both his family and the village they have come to. As political instability grows in the Congo, so does the local witch doctor's animus toward the Prices, and both seem to converge with tragic consequences about halfway through the novel. From that point on, the family is dispersed and the novel follows each member's fortune across a span of more than 30 years.

The Poisonwood Bible is arguably Barbara Kingsolver's most ambitious work, and it reveals both her great strengths and her weaknesses. As Nathan Price's wife and daughters tell their stories in alternating chapters, Kingsolver does a good job of differentiating the voices. But at times they can grate--teenage Rachel's tendency towards precious malapropisms is particularly annoying (students practice their "French congregations"; Nathan's refusal to take his family home is a "tapestry of justice"). More problematic is Kingsolver's tendency to wear her politics on her sleeve; this is particularly evident in the second half of the novel, in which she uses her characters as mouthpieces to explicate the complicated and tragic history of the Belgian Congo.

Despite these weaknesses, Kingsolver's fully realized, three-dimensional characters make The Poisonwood Bible compelling, especially in the first half, when Nathan Price is still at the center of the action. And in her treatment of Africa and the Africans she is at her best, exhibiting the acute perception, moral engagement, and lyrical prose that have made her previous novels so successful. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly
In this risky but resoundingly successful novel, Kingsolver leaves the Southwest, the setting of most of her work (The Bean Trees; Animal Dreams) and follows an evangelical Baptist minister's family to the Congo in the late 1950s, entwining their fate with that of the country during three turbulent decades. Nathan Price's determination to convert the natives of the Congo to Christianity is, we gradually discover, both foolhardy and dangerous, unsanctioned by the church administration and doomed from the start by Nathan's self-righteousness. Fanatic and sanctimonious, Nathan is a domestic monster, too, a physically and emotionally abusive, misogynistic husband and father. He refuses to understand how his obsession with river baptism affronts the traditions of the villagers of Kalinga, and his stubborn concept of religious rectitude brings misery and destruction to all. Cleverly, Kingsolver never brings us inside Nathan's head but instead unfolds the tragic story of the Price family through the alternating points of view of Orleanna Price and her four daughters. Cast with her young children into primitive conditions but trained to be obedient to her husband, Orleanna is powerless to mitigate their situation. Meanwhile, each of the four Price daughters reveals herself through first-person narration, and their rich and clearly differentiated self-portraits are small triumphs. Rachel, the eldest, is a self-absorbed teenager who will never outgrow her selfish view of the world or her tendency to commit hilarious malapropisms. Twins Leah and Adah are gifted intellectually but are physically and emotionally separated by Adah's birth injury, which has rendered her hemiplagic. Leah adores her father; Adah, who does not speak, is a shrewd observer of his monumental ego. The musings of five- year-old Ruth May reflect a child's humorous misunderstanding of the exotic world to which she has been transported. By revealing the story through the female victims of Reverend Price's hubris, Kingsolver also charts their maturation as they confront or evade moral and existential issues and, at great cost, accrue wisdom in the crucible of an alien land. It is through their eyes that we come to experience the life of the villagers in an isolated community and the particular ways in which American and African cultures collide. As the girls become acquainted with the villagers, especially the young teacher Anatole, they begin to understand the political situation in the Congo: the brutality of Belgian rule, the nascent nationalism briefly fulfilled in the election of the short-lived Patrice Lumumba government, and the secret involvement of the Eisenhower administration in Lumumba's assassination and the installation of the villainous dictator Mobutu. In the end, Kingsolver delivers a compelling family saga, a sobering picture of the horrors of fanatic fundamentalism and an insightful view of an exploited country crushed by the heel of colonialism and then ruthlessly manipulated by a bastion of democracy. The book is also a marvelous mix of trenchant character portrayal, unflagging narrative thrust and authoritative background detail. The disastrous outcome of the forceful imposition of Christian theology on indigenous natural faith gives the novel its pervasive irony; but humor is pervasive, too, artfully integrated into the children's misapprehensions of their world; and suspense rises inexorably as the Price family's peril and that of the newly independent country of Zaire intersect. Kingsolver moves into new moral terrain in this powerful, convincing and emotionally resonant novel. Agent, Frances Goldin; BOMC selection; major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
It's been five years since Kingsolver's last novel (Pigs in Heaven, LJ 6/15/93), and she has used her time well. This intense family drama is set in an Africa on the verge of independence and upheaval. In 1959, evangelical preacher Nathan Price moves his wife and four daughters from Georgia to a village in the Belgian Congo, later Zaire. Their dysfunction and cultural arrogance proves disastrous as the family is nearly destroyed by war, Nathan's tyranny, and Africa itself. Told in the voices of the mother and daughters, the novel spans 30 years as the women seek to understand each other and the continent that tore them apart. Kingsolver has a keen understanding of the inevitable, often violent clashes between white and indigenous cultures, yet she lets the women tell their own stories without being judgmental. An excellent novel that was worth the wait and will win the author new fans.

Got more Educated on African History Than I was Expecting, for Sure.
By Amazon Customer
Slow start, and seemed to have varying degrees of pacing/holding-interest for me. Felt it was primarily written with the agenda of chastising the white world for messing with Africa, and for having the silly notion that they could just waltz in and fix these "backwards" people and their unevolved way of life (the father epitomized this. I agree it was a silly notion, and I agree with the author's supposition of "who were the white people to define a backwards vs. a correct manner of living). I've enjoyed some of Kingsolver's previous novels, and learned a lot from reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, but maybe this time I wasn't in the mood to be lectured, and was first seeking entertainment. Five person/first person point of view was a bit confusing at first, and had to occasionally flip back to the beginning of the chapter to see who was speaking, and she gave subtle hints at first to help with that. My wife said she didn't care for so many POV's, and thought there wasn't enough distinction in each voice, but she was less than a quarter of the way through the book when I asked her about it. I liked it more as the story went on.
I also saw how she was trying to show a variety of reactions to the Africa experience, and especially enjoyed Rachel's.
Overall, I mostly enjoy Kingsolver's creativity, just felt this book was a bit drawn out and agenda-oriented.

If you're interested in African history, read this novel

"The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver

I just don't know how to review this novel. Yes, I read the whole thing, but I can't say, as I usually do, that it was entertaining. I don't think "entertaining" is the right word for it. Enlightening? Inspiring? Historically correct without being a boring history book? Yes, yes, yes, but...

I didn't fully appreciate this novel until I was very close to the end. Yes, I read it all, and yes I enjoyed reading it, but it was not like my usual novels. This was a deep story, a story that required some thinking and pondering and questioning and self-analysis.

If you have any interest in the history and cultural/social happenings in central African nations, then you should read this novel. Again, it's not so much historical as it is a story about the people and social culture of the regions. But it's sure not boring in that regard.

You'll notice I gave the story a 4-star rating, but it was better than that. 4.5 stars, 4.6 stars? Yeah, maybe, but not a full 5 stars. And that's only because it wasn't what I would term "entertaining".

You should read this novel, and if you haven't read "The Bean Tree", then read it, too.

Beautiful but Problematic
By BT Invictus
The Poisonwood Bible's setting is mesmerizing, its characters are compelling, its plot is suspenseful, and its historical backdrop is impressive. I often find stories told through multiple narrators to be deeply unsatisfying, but not here. Each of the five characters' voices is distinct from the others and very believable throughout most of the novel. Her chosen mode of narration is not just a postmodern gimmick - the five voices really do offer a richer and more robust view of the book's reality. For example, the observations of the shallow and nosy Rachel tend to advance the plot, while those of the more thoughtful narrators serve to develop the characters. The novel is expertly crafted and nearly perfect.

If I were to rate just the first two thirds of the novel, I wouldn't hesitate to be generous with all five stars. Near its conclusion, however, the book takes on an explicitly more political and ideological timbre that diminished the novel's narrative force for me. The story loses its momentum, the characters lose their nuance, and the themes lose their power, and everything feels manipulated for the sake of an agenda. As the novel approaches its resolution, it struck me that, if I were to rip the creative curtain away from her more "englightened" characters (that is, Leah, Adah, Anatole and Brother Fowles), I would find Barbara Kingsolver there, cowering wide-eyed like the exposed Wizard of Oz. Of course a novel can't help but present some kind of worldview through its characters and what happens to them, but this felt too obvious, as though she were trying too hard. There were times when I agreed with the book's ideology and other times when I questioned it, if only because it often had the dogmatic ring of Nathan Price himself, a sort of sad irony, I suppose. I guess I wished Kingsolver had decided to write an essay on her political views, leaving the novel to speak for itself. Or, at least I wish she had been a bit more subtle so as to make us read between the lines a little to figure out what she thinks. I think Things Fall Apart, a book that influenced Kingsolver's writing of The Poisonwood Bible, does a much better job of this. The result is a powerful novel that impacts its readers in a way that a thinly veiled ideological rant cannot.

I also found it a shame that Nathan Price has to bear the burden of representation for all Christians who take the Bible seriously. There are Christians and there a Christians - a quote that is repeated throughout the novel. What is meant by this, of course, is that there are Nathan Prices and there are Brother Fowleses, and sadly, neither one is an accurate representation of historic Protestantism. Nathan Price is a hateful, bigoted, misogynistic man who, in no way, embodies the spirit of the Christian message, neither in practice nor theology. His statement to his daughter "There will always be room for the righteous [in heaven]" betrays his belief in works-based righteousness, which is completely antithetical to the Gospel message and always has been. He believes that baptism alone brings about salvation, a very Catholic belief and not a Protestant one. He shuns sexual union with his wife, seeing it as some kind of sin. When the English Puritans, who celebrated marital intimacy and admonished those in their day who considered it sinful, have reason to call you a prude, you know something is up. And, yet, this is a man who is held up as one who zealously pursues biblical doctrine, a man who tries to live out the Bible's truth claims. I suspect that Kingsolver thinks this man is the living embodiment of the Bible's teachings. I honestly don't know where this guy's doctrine comes from.

Well, perhaps Brother Fowles is Kingsolver's attempt to be fair to Christianity. (It's obvious this is what she is trying to do here). After all, Brother Fowles is a more loving and accepting kind of Christian, so Christians are not all that bad, right? The problem is that he's a pantheistic, nature-worshipping pluralist who is very skeptical of the Bible's accuracy and authority. (Of course, his go-to passages were not tampered with by manuscript copiers and Bible translators; in theological arguments with Nathan Price, he can cite his favorite passages with confidence!) Although Brother Fowles is certainly more admirable and likable than Nathan Price, his theology is, likewise, not at all representative of historic Christianity in any meaningful sense. The novel seems to suggest that the logical extension of inerrancy and orthodoxy is Nathan Price, and that the only way a Christian can truly become a loving and accepting person is to abandon the faith's core tenets all together. We see this clearly with Leah Price as well. What a sad and untrue picture, and yet, that is the one the book presents.

This troubled me, and I found that even the novel's beauty could not make this bitter pill easier to swallow. In an author's note at the end of my edition of the book, Kingsolver responds somewhat defensively to those who take umbrage at the way she represents Christians in the novel, so I guess that would include me. "[The Poisonwood Bible] aroused ire in a few people who don't understand the symbolic nature of literature and presume that a Christian missionary character who behaves badly in a novel is somehow proof of the author's anti-Christian sentiments. If these people read more novels they would figure out that Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is not evidence that Mr. Stevenson hated physicians." For the sake of my own sanity, I'm not going to dwell on her assertion that anyone who finds himself irked by her portrayal of Christians is necessarily a dullard who needs to read more. I also won't elaborate as to why quotes likes these make me want to abandon authorial intention all-together and join the New Critics. Instead, I'll stick to my point: I'm not so much accusing her of having anti-Christian sentiments, but rather of misunderstanding Christianity all-together, of calling it something that it is not, of using a Christian straw man to demonstrate why Christianity has no value and no meaning outside of Western culture. The least she can do is evaluate Christianity on its own merits, given that her book seems to suggest that Christian doctrine and African culture will inevitably breed misunderstanding and tragedy. Again, I'll commend Achebe for his nuanced and more realistic portrayal of Christian missionaries in his novel. He captures the good, the bad and the ugly. And the result is complex, three-dimensional characters and a far more compelling narrative.

I certainly refuse to throw this book out with its ideological bathwater. It's beautifully written and has much to offer readers. I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading it. It's just not the perfect novel I was hoping it would be.

The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales, by Maria Tatar

Murder, mutilation, cannibalism, infanticide, and incest: the darker side of classic fairy tales figures as the subject matter for this intriguing study of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's Nursery and Household Tales. This updated and expanded second edition includes a new preface and an appendix containing new translations of six tales, along with commentary by Maria Tatar. Throughout the book, Tatar skillfully employs the tools not only of a psychoanalyst but also of a folklorist, literary critic, and historian to examine the harsher aspects of these stories. She presents new interpretations of the powerful stories in this worldwide best-selling book. Few studies have been written in English on these tales, and none has probed their allegedly happy endings so thoroughly.

From Publishers Weekly
This erudite, cogent perusal of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm's Nursery and Household Tales is, for the most part, accessible to a lay audience. Tatar charts the evolution of the tales through manuscript form and the various editions, and offers what she maintains is the first complete English translation of the prefaces to the first and second editions. The Grimms abandoned a scholarly effort to salvage pure remnants of folk poetry, advances Tatar, and "with each new edition, the tales veered more sharply away from the rough-hewn simplicity of their first versions to a sanitized and stylized literary form that proved attractive to both parents and children." She demonstrates how the Grimms purged the collection of references to sexuality and incestuous desire but intensified violence, particularly when it took the form of revenge. In opposition to child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, Tatar warns that some cautionary tales may instill fear, rather than confidence, in children; regarding "Bluebeard," she faults Bettelheim for turning a tale depicting the most brutal kind of serial murders into a story about idle female curiosity and duplicity. Tatar (Spellbound: Studies on Mesmerism and Literature) chairs the German literature department at Harvard University. Illustrated.

From Library Journal
Tatar brings into focus both familiar and not-so-familiar fairy tales as she by highlighting a number of important areas: the genesis and editorial history of the tales as they evolved from folk material to children's stories; interpretive approaches; nature and structure; the humble, fearless hero and humbled, hard-working heroine; villains; and, briefly, revenge. Her observations are unburdened by Marxist, psychoanalytical, or pedagogical biases, instead resting on sound and thorough scholarship and careful reading and comparison of texts. The absence of a bibliography is lamentable but should not prevent acquisition of this exceptional study by every library with a fairy tale collection. Review
"Tatar's main concern is with the enduring hold of the tales on children's imaginations. Why should they enjoy stories about other children sent out to die in a wood, or being victimized by cruel stepmothers, or given impossible tasks to perform, and (if female) forced to marry frogs or bears? . . . The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales--related in language that is sharp, lively, and free of jargon--is delightful evidence that Grimm scholarship can give pleasure to the general reader."--Janet Adam Smith, New York Review of Books

"For scholars, students, and general readers, Tatar's book is a balanced, sensitive, and informative guide to the content and context of Grimms' fairy tales."--Merle Rubin, The Christian Science Monitor

"Tatar takes detours into literary history here and into comparative anthropology there. What results is at once intelligently eclectic and refreshingly commonsensical, a thoughtful ramble through the dark childhood woods that haunt our adult dreams."--Carl Maves, San Francisco Chronicle

"A clear, imaginative and fascinating illumination of the stories we thought we knew."--Los Angeles Times Book Review

just the facts ma'm

Tells is like we never knew it as kids! Learning something new every day -- most fairy tales have a root in a very scarcy reality, and this book by Maria Tatar points that out!
