A Story of Java in the 1960s

I bought this book because I spent a short time in Indonesia recently. While I was there, I read an article about Ahmad Tohari. He mentioned that this book was controversial because of the way it depicted local village life and the political struggles in the mid 1960s. It appears that practically nothing has been published about this time in Indonesian history, especially in school books. I was also intrigued by the "ronggeng" or village dancer, which is a custom that is no longer practiced - and which some people deny ever truly existed.

Obviously, I read the translated version. I like to read books written about the way of life of the "common people" around the world. I don't expect these books to be a complete description of the people of a region or a country - any more than I would expect the story of a single farmer in Kansas to represent the whole of the US Midwest. This book is not an accurate or complete portrayal of the Indonesian civil strife; it is a story about about village people who were caught up in what was happening around them - regardless of whether they could see or understand the big picture.

Tohari tells the story well. It has a few fantastical elements, which I thought were in keeping with the beliefs of the story's characters. The details of village life are clearly drawn, and the characters have a very human mix of positive and negative traits. He withholds any obvious moral judgement until near the end - I suppose he couldn't resist. For me, that was the weakest part. There were occasional places where the characters' motivations were unclear to me: why did Rasus become a devout Muslim? But perhaps that would be more apparent to someone from the same culture, or perhaps I missed the clues in the translated version. I wished for a different ending, but I don't disagree with how Tohari closed the story.

Overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. Note that this was originally published as a trilogy; this English translation includes all three of the original books.

An intriguing story that captures a history, culture, time and place of early Java. Beautifully written with descriptions of nature interwoven with the engaging and eye-opening tale. I am going to Java shortly and I think what I experienced through this book will remain with me as I travel.

Excellent Resource Book

I am a manufacturing engineer and bought this book after after reading a couple articles written by O.D. Lascoe that were published on line. I was mainly interested in a couple chapters on punching, but the information in the book was definately worth the price and the wait. The book contains theory, formulas, and some testing results, all of which I found very useful. I liked what I read so much that I eventually finished the rest of the book. I would recommend this book to any engineer, technical, or manufacturing person; it's packed with information in an easy to read format.
Unfortunately this book is out of print, so I had to wait 3 or 4 weeks to receive it - as stated in the product description. Like every Amazon purchase I've made, the book arrived in brand new condition and Amazon's service was excellent.

Same material in 1988 edition!

For those of us looking for new up-to-date technical information in the process field we will have to go elsewhere. This book contains the same basic information as in the first edition. While it has some good material for learning beginning theoretical process control at the technical level it is a waste of money if you are interested in modern technology.

A good book for beinners but take a look at your course req

This was one of the first books i read on process control.Whether or not you should buy the book would depend on what your course demands.
The beauty of the book lies in its lucidity which shows the authors understanding of all the sensors and instruments...the book stresses on the principles of working of all the instruments. i understood every single transducer I learnt about in the book.Another plus point of the book is that it is self-sufficient, in that you dont have to take another book while reading this one.It starts off by discussing all that you need to know about OP-Amp circuits for process control and even digital electronics.
My course in Process Control demanded a very high degree of detail in most of the process control mechnanisms and transducers so i didnt find everything I needed in this book.But it covered my syllabus to the greatest extent of all the books and explained it in a beautiful manner.

Decent book

Worked great for my class, what little we used it. I'm a MET major that is required to take this electrical course, so it was a little outside my field of study. The book wasn't too bad, and the Eastern Education Edition (International) was actually recommended by our professor. Did everything we needed it to do.
