Good for a new age newbie

Over the years, I've purchased several of Andrew Matthews' books and have always liked their succinct presentation, cartoon representations and light-hearted prose, replete with sharp short answers, and this book is no different. However, reading 'How Life Works' just didn't have anything profound to share that I've not heard elsewhere. It felt like a rehash of the 'Law of Attraction' with some quasi-scientific reasons and personal anecdotes to back it up. For example, using Dr Emoto's book on water droplet crystallography as evidence for thoughts affecting the environment hardly qualifies for hard evidence as the work was biased and not blind controlled; nor was it ever reproduced by him or others (nor has he given access to all of his data to anyone). In any case, I felt that this book went into the 'woo-woo' realm just a tad overboard - for some, it might be fine, but for me, it smelt too much of unicorns and rainbows. There are clear cognitive reasons behind the law of attraction and it is not simply because, in Andrew-speak, your vibration is matching the universe's. I was expecting a more rational viewpoint, and that could well be me as I tend to be more evidence focussed.
I still gave this book three stars as there are still some good gems in this book in relation to observing and restructuring your thoughts to create a more positive life for oneself, self-worth, self-acceptance and self-compassion. This is good for a new age newbie or a youngster, but if you're wanting something of more substance or depth, this might not the book for you.

Laughing your way to enlightenment

Due to the fact that I enjoy Andrew Matthew’s books so much, and also due to the fact that Andrew’s latest book, “How Life Works” does not come in a hard copy in the North American market, I decided to break with my long-standing resolve of not reading/reviewing E-books. Hey, what good are rules if they aren’t broken… once-in-awhile?

And, as often happens when we start to break the rules, it is easier to break subsequent ones; therefore, I am deliberately starting this sentence with ‘and’ when I unabashedly confess that many of Andrew’s cartoons make me laugh my arse off. If I am having a rough day and just need to be uplifted with a good chuckle, I can flip through Andrew’s books and I am bound to have a good belly laugh.

In addition to the humourous cartoons, Andrew also has a very special gift of adding amusing, poignant examples that remind us that self-improvement/empowerment doesn’t have to be serious business. Many books that have been written in this genre take on a very stern tone that can impart the belief that personal development requires struggle; whereas, Andrew’s demeanor is light-hearted and this makes personal growth more enticing. I believe that by taking powerful, life-changing concepts about the nature of our reality, the power of thought, the need to love ourselves, the importance of feeling in the process of manifestation, how obstacles can actually be gifts etc., Andrew is able to share a mental meal that is a lot more palatable than fire and brimstone.

For those of you that are familiar with the smiling Buddha statue, I think the Buddha is smiling because he knew what Andrew Matthews knows - that the secret of life is to enjoy it and, even when things aren’t as we want them to be, we have a choice in how we react. It’s either that, or the Buddha is smiling because he just read one of Andrew’s books. Serious fun.

AACN Pocket Handbook of Critical Care Nursing

As a new nurse to ICU I have found this pocket guide handy as a reference, a teacher, and for finding information quickly It is easy to use, with a lot of information needed in the adult ICU. It has a very good section on IV medication with dilutions and infusion times. The size of the actual pocket guide itself is somewhat larger than others that I have seen, but it has easy to read print size.

disappointing

I was very disappointed with the pocket handbook for several reasons, the primary being that the ACLS guidelines were not the updated current ones. I also found the small print difficult to read and the use of only black print with no color coding made it hard to search though.

A Classic...

Mary Renault casts a spell in "The Persian Boy", the pivot of her 2nd installment of her Alexander Great triad. "Fire From Heaven," being the first, and "The Funeral Games," being the third.

The Persian Boy tells the story of Bagoas, who is born into an aristocratic family. In the first few pages Bagoas is subjected to the turmoil resulting from the death of King Ochos. His father, mother, and sisters, are killed and he himself is castrated and sold at the age of 10. Another tragedy follows in time: Bagoas is sold by his master to other men as a prostitute. Procured for King Darius, Bagoas's luck changes only slightly; instead of being sold to many men, he is kept by one man, a King he holds in awe for his station, and not out of personal admiration.

Darius has made the mistake of underestimating the young Macedonian King Alexander, who at 20 undertakes the conquest of Greek cities in Asia Minor. But Alexander closes in on the Persian Empire, and Darius suffers one defeat after another until his own warlords lose faith in him. When a coup sees Darius taken prisoner, Bagoas escapes with only his life. In time, he is rescued by one of those warlords, and as fate has it, he is to beg Alexander for clemency. Bagoas is used to sweeten the deal--as a gift.

Alexander is presented by Renault as a man capable of more than mortal feats who is still reassuringly human--more than that, he needs love desperately, from the hero-worship of the soldiers who follow him to the intimate devotion of his lover Hephaistion. Bagoas has never known love at all, only use. When Macedonian King and Persian courtesan meet, the inevitable happens--and this is where the enchantment begins.

Renault's mastery is impeccable. With a few well-chosen words, she conjures the images of the great Persian palaces--the ruins at Persepolis, Susa, Ekbatana, and Babylon; she recreates the travels of the Macedonian army so well that any reader who picks up her companion book "The Nature of Alexander" will look at the pictures and recognize the structures. Renault is a master characters builder. Bagoas is keenly intelligent, charming, courtly, sarcastic, prey to jealousy and possessiveness when it comes to his lover; his growing maturity merely adds to the pain he experiences as the affair and Alexander's conquests progress. And Alexander is much more accessible here than in "Fire From Heaven," which is a wonderful book but presents Alexander as all light and no fire. Here we get to see Alexander as preening boy, heroic warrior, pragmatic king, and devoted lover. It is a marvelous love story whether or not it actually happened.

The book is narrated from a first person point of view, and it's Bagoas perspective that is used to frame the events that go from Alexander's 20th birthday to his death. A wonderful read.

Quick shipping,good price,good condition. Book is fiction but takes into consideration many true facts about Alexander the Great and really describes the epic of those times.Quite descriptive of the customs of those ancient empires.

Great, Often Moving Novel

Mary Renault’s “The Persian Boy” is billed as the second in a trilogy of novels along with “Fire From Heaven” and “Funeral Games” covering the life of Alexander the Great. It actually stands well on its own, relying on a first person narrator instead of a more third-party omnipotent narrator like the other two books in the series. Renault offers a captivating account of Bagoas, the eunuch who served both Darius and Alexander, and presents a strong, often moving, romantic story even as the great conquerer claims the remnants of Persia and marches into India. The loyalty Bagoas gives and receives is moving even as the story marches to its heartbreaking conclusion. There can be some minor quibbles of course (to put it mildly Renault thinks the world of Alexander) but there are many reasons this book stands out as a classic about LGBT and historic novels after almost four decades. A strong novel that works on many levels.

The text has been used successfully in its preliminary form at several universities, but it may also be used for self-study.

A good door to a spiritual world

Such a book does not have the pretension to cover the whole language of the canonical Buddhist texts, but it contains enough stuff to enable you to navigate in and understand most canonical Buddhist texts. The authors chose to give some texts first at the beginning of each of the twelve lessons, then the necessary lexicon, and then the explanations of the main syntactic facts present in the texts, though not enough if you want to understand everything. You will miss a few details, except if you use outside tools, such as a dictionary and other grammars, to find out these missing details.

Don't worry! You will not get to the end of it, because there is no perfect and absolute tool. You will have to spend at least ten hours on each chapter and you will know a lot at the end because you will have learned just the same lot. The book has one flaw though. The authors probably do not believe in honesty, faith and love of hard work on the side of the users or learners. The authors do not give anywhere in the book a translation of the texts.

And that is a real want, a real shortcoming. I found quite a few words that are not in the lexicon of the book, nor in any dictionary. Too bad for us, we will never know. I must also say that there is no real detailed explanation about how to work with this book that is a text book after all. It is true each student has to develop his own method . But a standard sample of a method, at least for those who don't know how to do it, would be a good prompter and a useful alpenstock on the way up this mountain.

Finally it is quite obvious a student will not be able to improve his "reading skill" if he does not have the recording of the texts. This is real problem: a CD would have made this book a ten times better tool for any student even those who have some Pali phonetics in their ears. But even so the book is quite a good and needed help.

A great textbook with excellent readings

This is a great textbook to learn Pali with. All of the grammar explanations are concise and yet clear. The reading sections are long enough to enjoy, and follow the grammar and vocabulary of the lessons very well. There is plenty of vocabulary introduced in each lesson. There's a lot packed into this small book.
As far as the one reviewer's complaint with missing words, I've yet to find a word that isn't in the vocabularies or glossary.

I think this is an very needed addition to Pali studies. This book will give you a great start in this important language of Buddhism.

Intense, but good...

This little book does NOT mess around!!! You begin with full fledged sutram and learn from there. That said, that is one of the things I most appreciate... I have been circling Sanskrit and Pali for a little while, feeling a little pang of guilt that I can't read the sacred texts of my own faith tradition in the original, and I've come across courses that either start you off with the assumption that you have a PhD in Phonetics (for Sandhi) and Semantics (for everything else), or course that have you learning to say things like "My name is Rama. I drive a Toyota." (seriously, I thought that one was hilarious) I appreciate this as a fantastic midpoint between those two... it recognizes that the reader may not be a professional linguistician, but also doesn't pretend that this is a language that you're going to chat in with your friends.
