Meanwhile Hank Busche, the unwanted pastor of the little Ashton Community Church discovers that there are many demons in the town and wonders why they have all congregated here. When he gets to be a nuisance to the demons they have the Society falsely arrest him for rape During the time that this is happening, the story takes on a spiritual dimension - revealing a perspective based on the idea of unseen forces at work. The angels who wage warfare for the souls of mankind look and act similar to humans, and they are propelled by heavenly forces that often manifest as wings. They wear armor and wield weapons forged in heaven - most notably, swords. Demons, as well, are depicted as being ink-like shadows in the darkness, flowing from shadow to shadow, until the time comes when they truly reveal themselves as monstrous beasts with bat-wings and armor. Incredible, intense read!

" Wicked" was wickedly good! I could not put this book down I read it in a few short hours !
Parker and Kade; twin brothers raised by their father alone after their mother dies in childbirth but when they were in their. Teens their father remarried and they get a beautiful little stepsister , Lily. Lily and Parker form an instant bond, always together and the best of freinds, however Kade and Lily never quite bond the same way.
Years later the relationship is much the same , Parker always there to support her and Kade is distant , Kade has figured out why he was always uncomfortable around Lily and still is, it is hard to be in love with your stepsister when your not supposed to feel that way.
To say Kade and Lily's relationship is strained is putting it simply, but it becomes even more s o when the boy's father passes Then shortly after they loose Lily's mom to breast cancer. Everything goes to hell then, the company that their father and her mother built somehow gets left to Lily only, the boys are forced by lawyers from this family home and to spite Lily trying to include them , most of the money is tied up in the company .
Parker and Kade's resentment of Lily grows and one drunken night Kade comes up with the idea to seduce Lily, marry her and then divorce getting the half they should of had all along, for Kade a sober mind regrets ever having the thought because his heart still wants Lily, he never stopped loving her!
Parker however , once he gets something in his head, it is all engines ahead full Parker uses his closeness from the last with Lily to get back together with her , but Kade still keeps his distance, well until she asks him to kiss her that is, it turns out Lily has always had a crush on Kade too!
Kade can't bring himself to tell Parker and he has no intention of going through with his original plan , but Parker begins to get more and more agitated with Lily because suddenly she has no time for him, he has no idea it is because Lily and Kade ar dating, and when he finds out Parker becomes unglued, physically and mentally; at this point the book takes a dark turn. Not only are you dealing with a rift between twin brothers , but Parker is fixated on revenge, thoughts of killing his brother and then claiming Lily for his own.
The author takes you through twist and turns and the dark thoughts and actions of Parker , she has you sitting in the edge for the rest of the book to see what will happen and if Kade and Lily , can make a go of a relationship and survive Parkers plotting!
Absolutely intense read, be prepared to loose a few hours because their is no putting this book down!

Which brother do you choose?

I thought this was an fantastic stepbrother story. Lily, Kade and Parker grew up together. Happy family until one day, Kade and Parker's Dad dies. Lily's mom dies soon after. With no written agreement all the family money is left to Lily. Angry, the twin brothers decide they will do anything to get what belongs to them. What happens thought when one brother wants something different than the other? This is a great story of love and dark pain. I enjoyed it and could not put it down.

Dark and Twisty Step-Brother Romance

I received an ARC of Wicked by Alyssa Alpha in return for my honest opinion.
Wicked is a fast paced twisted love story. The story is dark and may not be suitable for those who are offended by physical, sexual, and mental abuse towards women.
Lily is the beloved step-sister and Parker and Kade are her step-brothers. Both brothers are in love with Lily but in completely different ways. The three step siblings are all that is left of their blended families. Lily inherited the business and the boys didn't receive anything. The brothers decide that they want their share, and decide to make Lily pay. However, both brothers, Kade and Parker figure out that they are both in love with Lily, and neither wants to back down. What follows is a twisted tale of love, hate and revenge. The story does span a few years and does have a HEA ending.
The story was fast paced and was an easy read. I would read more of Alyssa Alpha's books.

Necessary Book for Finance

The material in this book is necessary for anyone who is responsible for managing money or involved with a business entity doing trading in financial markets. Increasingly this is "everyone."
The good news is that the conclusions and punchlines are presented clearly and simply. A person who does not want to follow the math (there is a lot of it) can skip to the arguments and conclusions and get an enormous amount of valuable information. The bad news is that little effort has been expended to make the math attractive. A person wishing to slog through the math will have to be prepared to sit down with pencil & paper & patience. Some editing by someone who cared would have made this book much more attractive to the average student. Martin Baxter & Andrew Rennie's "Financial Calculus" gives a good example of how this can be done.

Best introductory book on behavioral finance

As has been admitted by even the staunchest former proponents of financial economics (such as Burton Malkiel), the multi-decades old dominant intellectual field in academic finance has piled up against itself persistent anomalous data. Thus, it is no surprise, as the science of economics advanced, that a new intellectual field would develop to challenge and replace the old. Behavioral finance, which relaxes some of the key assumptions in financial economics, utilizes survey data, and integrates knowledge from psychology to better understand financial markets, is that new intellectual field.

Although still controversial, young economists and financial professionals should become versed in this new field as early as possible: 1) because there is huge room for new research where creative economists can flex their muscle and 2) financial professionals that drop the old adherence to financial economics will have an edge over those that don't. Andrei Shleifer's work is the best introductory work on behavioral finance that I've come across, and I thus strongly recommend it to those who want a quick and easy to understand introduction to this field which is the wave of the future of academic finance (well, I hope).

Chapter 1 lays out the two pillars to his argument: a theory of investor sentiment, and limits to arbitrage. Both are needed, as without systematic deviations from rationality, irrational decisions cancel each other out, making them somewhat uninteresting (excepting increasing volume); without limits to arbitrage such irrational deviations from `true value' are instantly poached by savvy rational investors.
The first model shows that if arbitrage is limited and noise traders have systematic biases, prices can deviate from fundamental value (DeLong et al, 1990a). That is, Shell can deviate from its fundamental value because no one has enough money and time to put the price into equilibrium, and investor sentiment varies between markets and over time. This model also has the interesting implication that less informed investors might earn a higher rate of return on their total portfolios because they irrationally believe they have a more favorable risk-return opportunity and hence invest in securities with a higher return. In effect, their stupidity effectively diminishes their risk aversion, and in the long run allows a lucky few of them to reap the financial rewards that would accrue to the less risk averse (one could call it the `Forrest Gump' effect). As opposed to speculation weeding out the irrational traders and making only the best opinions matter, the irrational can dominate.
The closed fund puzzle is presented in chapter three and highlights some of the problems of this approach (Lee, Thaler and Shleifer, 1991). The issue to be explained is why 1) funds are issued at premiums to net asset value (overpriced) and 2) funds eventually trade at discount to net asset value (underpriced). While the underpricing is addressed through the mechanism outlined in the first model (limited arbitrage and noise traders), the overpricing effect is addressed by assuming that `noise traders' buy up the initial issuance-not very subtle. Clearly if noise traders can be foisted into overpaying or underpaying within models by assumption, it is hard to avoid the inference that this approach can explain everything and thus nothing.
Of course on occasion EMH proponents also try to explain seemingly everything, where exceptions are assumed order-statistics until they are granted statistical significance, at which time they are instantly seen as an efficient proxy of unmeasured risk (e.g., the value and size effect). Yet explanatory greediness is clearly more of a problem to the inefficient markets camp. For example, in addition to the above example, investor sentiment is used to explain both the equity-premium puzzle (i.e., why stock prices are too low on average) and why recent p/e multiples are too high (page 180): if the equity-premium is a `puzzle' it is difficult to also say that our currently historically high p/e multiple is irrational, but if the p/e ratio `should' be lower (around 15) then the equity premium is not a puzzle.
In chapter 4 a nice approach is taken towards professional arbitrage (Shleifer and Vishny, 1997). By modeling it as a principal agent problem, this model captures some relevant issues usually addressed by the Industrial Organization literature. Clearly there is relevance to modeling the situation where hedge fund managers have uncertain skill and investors have to evaluate them. The failure of famed hedge fund LTCM in 1998 was defended, like almost all bankruptcies, as a failure of investor's patience--outsiders are always much quicker at pulling the plug than insiders would prefer. Modeling, in this case, a liquidity constraint, is a highly relevant issue that seems well suited for asymmetric information and principal-agent modeling.
Chapter 5 introduces the model of investor sentiment, that is, why we should expect noise traders to vary systematically in their buy or sell orders (Barberis, Shleifer, and Vishny, 1998). It derives a straightforward and testable hypothesis based on Bayesian updating of a regime-switching model. For earnings or other surprises that continue a trend, overreaction is predicted, for surprises that counter a trend, underreaction is predicted.
In chapter 6, we see the DeLong, Shleifer, Summers, and Waldeman series on noise traders and positive feedback loops (DSSW, 1990b). This sort of model bothers me because it is a bit disingenuous. It puts superficial rigor onto to the simple idea that "given constraints on arbitrage, irrational trend-following investors can make it rational to follow trends, and thus rational traders can be destabilizing." It is not a compelling model because the results are not derived inevitably and subtly from general assumptions and a friction, but instead from assumptions which guarantee the result (e.g., trend-following noise traders and limited arbitrage). Is it at all helpful to take a straightforward idea that can be clearly expressed in a sentence and model this with contrived algebra? Personally I do not think so, though the realist in me understands that without a model to point to, the idea would not be taken as seriously as it has.
It is stressed throughout the book that risky arbitrage makes taking advantage of pervasive irrationality difficult. Yet if irrationality is a systemic and pervasive phenomenon, then there exist hundreds of scenarios like mispriced Shell, overvalued Amazon, undepriced closed funds, overvalued currencies, overvalued IPOs, etc. Surely over several years these positions, somewhat independent, should make significant abnormal risk-adjusted returns. As is more probable, there are not hundreds of such situations, but perhaps a handful, and with the rational markets assumption ignored hundreds more opportunities appear to exist but actually do not (e.g., the small firm effect). Be sure to monitor Thaler's funds (UBRLX and UBVLX) and Sheifer's fund (LSVEX).

About the Author
Najwan Darwish, one of the foremost Arabic-language poets of his generation, was born in Jerusalem in 1978, exactly thirty years after his family was exiled from their home in the western part of the city. Shortly after studying in Amman, Jordan, and becoming a lawyer, Darwish decided to give up law and devote himself more fully to literature. He has worked as the editor of two cultural magazines in Palestine and was a cultural critic for the prominent Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar from 2006 to 2012. Darwish has been an organizer and advisor for many public arts projects, among them the Palestine Festival of Literature. In 2009, he founded a literary press in Jerusalem, and he is currently involved in establishing a new pan-Arab newspaper, where he will be the chief editor of the arts and culture section. Darwish’s poetry is informed by Arabic and Western poetic traditions, both classical and modern, as well as by Persian Sufi poetry. Since the publication of his first collection in 2000, his poetry has been acclaimed across the Arab world and has been translated into fifteen languages. In 2009 he was on the Hay Festival Beirut’s list of the “best 39 Arab authors under the age of 39.” He currently resides in Jerusalem.

Kareem James Abu-Zeid was born in 1981. Half American and half Egyptian, he has translated novels by the Lebanese writer Rabee Jaber and the Sudanese writer Tarek Eltayeb, as well the poetry collection The Iraqi Nights by Dunya Mikhail. Abu-Zeid also translates from French and German, and has taught university courses in four different languages in Berkeley, Mannheim, and Heidelberg. He works as a freelance translator and editor, and is currently writing a history of psychedelic literature that is doubling as his PhD dissertation in comparative literature at the University of California Berkeley.

Beautiful, insightful, and haunting

This beautiful, yet haunting collection of poetry by Najwan Darwish, deftly translated from the original Arabic by Kareem James Abu-Zeid, transported me into the world of the Palestinian refugee. Not only is his experience personal, but his poetry speaks about his people and perhaps the plight of all refugees. In his poem, "The Mousetrap", Darwish sums up that plight with grace and beauty: "The mouse in the trap says: History is not on my side...Yet despite all this, I have faith my progeny will prevail." His poetry conveys anger, desperation, and yet, hopefulness. Initially I read one poem a night, leaving me time to take in his thoughts and emotions. Darwish seems to speak with many voices, yet when I reread the entire collection in an evening, I could see how it all fits together beautifully. So happy to have shared a part of his world.

About the Author

NOELLE HANCOCK is a former staff writer for the New York Observer. Her work has appeared in GQ, Gawker, Us Weekly, and elsewhere. She was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Yale University. She lives in Manhattan with her parakeets, Jesus and Stuart. Her parents are still holding out for law school.

Equivalent of reality TV.

I am in a book club of women between 55 and 90, and none of us cared for this book, other than the parts about Eleanor Roosevelt. From all the postive reviews, I can only guess that it appeals more to younger women. My personal view, which may sound a little harsh, is that the author, whose one over-riding fear seems to be not winning at everything she does, wanted to write a book but needed material, so she created this concept of doing things she was afraid of. This seems to be a trend in publishing, perhaps started by "Eat, Pray, Love" and the book about the girl cooking Julia Child recipes (also see "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver) -- authors pitch an idea to publishers that involves setting up some kind of challenge for themselves for a year and then they write about it. It's the eqivalent of a reality TV show. Most of us found her challenges superficial and somewhat forced. One person commented "She went from writing about celebraties to trying to become one herself by writing a book about herself." Way too much narcisism here. She has good writing skills, but needs a subject that has some substance.

Inspiring Memoir About Facing Fears Big and Small

Normally I'm somewhat wary of "I tried __ for a year" memoirs, but this one is delightful, inspiring and offers some history lessons. When Noelle Hancock learns that her entertainment blogging job has ended, she's at a loss as to what to do. In therapy, she's trying to overcome her fears, and she decides to look to Eleanor Roosevelt for advice, latching on to the First Lady's prompt to do one thing each that scares you. Hancock doesn't detail 365 feats, but the ones she does are at turns dramatic (shark diving, trapeze work, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro), unnerving (working at a mortuary to conquer her fear of death), amusing (doing standup comedy is the thing she fears most) and more everyday (weaning herself off sleeping pills). Along the way she writes about her fears about whether her boyfriend's reporter job will always outshadow her and the future of their relationship.

What I appreciated most is that Hancock is not trying to tell everyone to apply Eleanor's advice, and she grapples constantly with being "ready" to face her fears, taking her last sleeping pill when she is forced to by the mountain climb. She isn't overly self-deprecating, but does bare her fears in a way that makes it almost impossible not to like her as a narrator--or look inward at one's own fears. She also shines a bit of light on some of the major accomplishments of Eleanor Roosevelt, and while the two are from very different times, the effect Eleanor has on the author is clear in her references and devotion to living according to her spirit. This memoir never feels predetermined, and Hancock's insights into her accomplishments are as worthy of attention as her feats themselves, especially relating to Kiliminjaro. She shows an empathy and compassion that extends to her friends and those she meets (including the dead) as well as to herself.
