It's 2029, and Japan has gathered a troop of military cyborgs in Section Nine, a secret paramilitary security squad. The S-9 squad leader is the tall and sexy female cyborg Major Kusanagi, and the men under her command include the gruff Batou and the uncertain (and mostly human) rookie Togusa. Bafflingly metaphysical and utterly gripping, the book is an episodic chronicle of S-9's missions that illustrates the fluid nature of crime, espionage and geopolitical skullduggery in a world where human personality, vast data networks and cybernetic technology have essentially fused into a single social matrix. The team tracks criminals, spies and terrorists who hack networks or illegally copy the ghosts (or souls) of enslaved humans into black market cyborgs. Their ultimate case is the Puppeteer, a deadly cyberterrorist who turns out to be a ghostless, "self-aware" artificial intelligence spontaneously created out of the vast sea of networked information. Masamune's b&w drawings are dynamic and beautifully gestural; he vividly renders the awesome urban landscape of a futuristic, supertechnological Japan. This new edition restores material (including graphic sex scenes) deleted from the earlier U.S. edition.

Great artwork, good stories

The artwork is great and many of the stories I have seen in the films. Usually at the beginning of the story there are a few pages in color, but the rest is in black and white. The stories are interesting and I have had trouble putting it down. There are explanations on the pages as to what is what sometimes, plus there is a great amount of info in the back pages. Some of the words are too small for me to read and I have had to use a magnifying glass. Sometimes I get a bit confused as I am not sure in which order I should read some of the frames. It has been a long time since I read a Comic Book(graphic novel/manga) that I am thoroughly enjoying reading this one, especially since Ghost in The Shell is one of my Favorite Series/films. I thought the price was bit high, but at 350 pages it is a good value.

How Human are you?

Ghost in the Shell depicts a world very likely to come true. A world where the line between man and machine has become blurry and machines become human while men can be programed. A world of robots, cyborgs, super tech, violence and the same greed, ambition and folly of always. The story is entertaining, complex and dark. Sometimes it can be lighthearted but it is mainly dark. Because when you trade your flesh for power, what is left of YOU?

How do you become an expert on miso? Spend eight months apprenticed to a traditional miso master in a Japanese village. Work long, hot hours preparing and mixing soybeans, separating the grains by hand and fermenting them in 200-year-old vats. At least that's what these authors have done, and the result is this engrossing guide to fermented soy. In the hands of the Bellames, miso is more than an ingredient: it's an ancient tradition, originating in China around 800 B.C., before becoming the food of conquerors in 15th-century Japan. It became an integral part of the lives of modern Japanese people, and spread to America during the 1960s macrobiotics movement. This book covers different types of miso, how to make miso at home and miso's health benefits, which include lowered cholesterol and enhanced immune function. The book's bulk and climax is a buffet of tempting recipes: expected fare, like Kyoto-Style Miso Soup and Spicy Soba Salad, accompany many dishes not normally associated with miso, such as French Onion Soup, Italian-Style Stuffed Shells, Caribbean Fish Chowder and Apple-Nut Muffins. Although the authors probably offer more information about miso than most people need to know, their reverence and enthusiasm for their topic is impressive.

A good introduction to adding miso to your "American" recipes

This cookbook is a vegetarian cookbook, but it is not just for vegetarians. I was looking for a way to incorporate the different varieties of miso into my regular, everyday cooking. I was originally introduced to a package of miso by way of a Gourmet magazine Thanksgiving Day recipe. And I can now say: Hey, this is great stuff! It adds a lot of unique flavor to a dish, and I really like this flavor! When we're talking umami, why aren't we talking miso, along with soy sauce and other products? And it's good for you--at least it is if you don't kill the beneficial organisms by high heat. So, I purchased this cookbook and "Miso Cookery" by Louise Hagler.

If you can only purchase one book, I would go with this one, as it contains more general information about miso and its health benefits, there are a lot more recipes, and the overall presentation is a bit more sophisticated.

There are more than the average amount of very nice dressing and sauce recipes. And the soup recipes--what a great assortment of recipes that incorporate miso! While there are some Japanese recipes and Japanese-inspired recipes, most of the recipes in this book are more, what I would call, "Continental", with an assortment that includes French Onion Soup and Boston Baked Beans.

Positive/Negative: The authors of this book are affiliated with "The American Miso Company", whose products I have not found locally. And the type of miso is listed in English, with no Japanese equivalant. This means that it's not real easy to go into your local Asian market and identify what you are looking for.

For those of you who choose your cookbooks by presentation, (how many pictures, quality of paper and cover material, etc.), you may not be real happy with this cookbook, as it has no pictures. It is a real basic, average-quality publication and you may not be happy with it if you pay the full cover price of $15.95. But if you want to add to the quality and "mystery" and umami of your cooking, this book is a worthwhile addition to your collection.

A Medical Research Biologist's Nutritionally Superior Recipes

I am no stranger to miso, having cooked with miso for forty years.

A major - and apparently overlooked - strength of the Bellemes' THE MISO BOOK is the high quality of this book's recipes, including (1) the special nutritional nature of certain of these recipes' unique ingredients, and (2) the scientific and disarmingly concise and consistent precision in which these recipes are written.

Read the "About the Authors" note, on page 175 of THE MISO BOOK, to learn about the Bellemes' unique scholarly qualifications to write nutritionally knowledgeable and sophisticated recipes like those in THE MISO BOOK.

I previously wrote a "customer review" for this AMAZON website of the Bellemes' book entitled JAPANESE FOODS THAT HEAL: USING TRADITIONAL JAPANESE INGREDIENTS TO PROMOTE HEALTH, LONGEVITY & WELL-BEING (2007), a book which discusses some of the nutritionally superior and unique ingredients which are key elements in most of THE MISO BOOK's recipes.

In stark contrast to the recipes in THE MISO BOOK, this morning I happened to conduct a nutritional and compositional analysis of each and every single recipe in Robin Robertson's book entitled FRESH FROM THE VEGETARIAN SLOW COOKER. What a radical difference from the high quality of the recipes in THE MISO BOOK! Robin Robertson's recipes instruct her readers to use WHITE rice, SUGAR, FROZEN foods, CANNED corn, CANNED peas, CANNED beans - etc., etc. - as well as other nutritionally abhorrent cooking ingredients.

It was my analysis of Robin Robertson's recipes this morning that made me acutely aware of just how nutritionally superior the recipes are in THE MISO BOOK - in fact, I never previously realized this aspect about a cookbook's recipes before this morning. This is a useful insight.

Looking to the Upper Story

The bigger picture has always captivated me.

The idea that God is on a rescue mission to restore the world He created and the people in it to relationship with Him-- and how everything in the story of our lives, and all the individual stories we're living, are all working together to that end, and how, in fact, we are invited to play a part in that rescue mission story... It puts things in perspective.

Randy Frazee calls this bigger picture the 'upper story' in his book The Heart of the Story: God's Masterful Design to Restore His People. He calls our circumstances as we see them through our human experiences the 'lower story'. What I loved about this book was the idea of taking the whole entire bible--the hundreds of memorable and not so memorable 'lower' stories of human experience -- and making a basic summary of it to repaint it in light of the upper story, the bigger picture. In these stories innumerable many of us have grown up hearing about, the characters were firmly entrenched in their own lower stories of human circumstance, just like you and I. And yet, when we stand back and look at the bigger picture the Word of God is showing, we can see the upper story significance of each individual character's lower story (Have I driven home enough the 'story' idea yet?). There is something so innately encouraging in that. I happen to be firmly entrenched in my own lower story, and need constant reminders of that upper story God's unfolding just beyond my human vision, closer than my circumstances tell...

I was excited when I was offered this book for review because I relished the idea of digesting the whole entire story of the Bible all in one big gulp. Frazee, a teaching pastor by vocation and the author of numerous previous books, didn't disappoint in his anecdotal summary. I often get tripped up in the minor prophets. I take them one by one as moving pieces of literature, but struggle to fit them into the chronological narrative of Israel's story. The Heart of the Story helpfully wove the myriad of true tales together in a way that I could cognitively see where they fit into the story in history. And Frazee did it while also lifting the reader's eyes up to the way it all fits into the bigger picture / upper story.

If I could make any criticisms about this book, they would be only from a point of view of my admittedly snobby literaturary tastes :) I sometimes found his writing style a bit juvenile, as if he was trying too hard to sound 'cool', but because I believe this was an effort to make God's Word approachable by anyone, I think we should let it slide ;) It was extremely readable and that can be hard to find when it comes to wrestling with Biblical literature and matters of Theology.

All that said, I think you should read this book!

Good Primer on the Biblical Storyline

I think of people in my church right now.

We have a mix of people who are searching, but have not yet made a faith committment, new in the faith, but don't know how to read the bible, learning basic bible stories since they have never read the bible before.

Our church has many people who lack a basic biblical literacy that Christians have. They are new believers from unchurched background who are just now starting to read scriptures.

Like the newest members of our church congregation, if you are not familiar with the story line of Scripture, The Heart of the Story would be a great place to start.

I can imagine churches giving this book to first time church visitors, new Christians, or even in using The Heart of the Story in a seeker oriented class. It could also serve a rightful place in a Christianity 101 type class, or as a personal 31 day devotional.

If you are just starting out in your Christian walk and want to have that big-picture overview of the narrative of Scripture, Frazee can be your guide. Along the way, Frazee makes several connections to our current life, particularly about how God can use ordinary and even unlikely people to advance His plan.

Great book! Easy to read.

Have you ever wondered what you are missing? Why on earth is Numbers and Leviticus included in the Bible? Why must we suffer through some of the Old Testament. Why can't I just read the gospels and forget the rest? In his book The Heart of the Story by Randy Frazee he takes you on a journey. the thing is this journey is about YOU. It is about how God designed all of history to restore us His people. Randy steps us through many of the Major stories of the Bible from Genesis to Revelations and shows how these books and stories are apart of us. I once heard that in order to fully understand who you are you need to understand where you came from. This history included in the scriptures helps us to see God's design! The same God who has placed such detailed order and design to even the tiniest of molecules to the most distant star that no one might ever see; this same God has woven a detail into us that we need to understand. Thanks to Zondervan for giving me this chance to read this advanced copy. I recomend this book for personal, church, and small group study! The Tao..who am I to review this?

This is quite a task, reviewing any interpretation of the Tao. It has been translated, interpreted, had interpretations reinterpreted...and so on. The Sacred Way is the one that was around the house when I was a kid, and though I have enjoyed many versions since, and find that some have more clarity, this is the one that ties my decades together most completely. And that is the essence of the Tao; no right, no wrong interpretation. Just be.

You won't find this book on a school library shelf--it's pure teenage anarchy. While many homeschooling authors hem and haw that learning at home isn't for everyone, this manifesto practically tells kids they're losers if they do otherwise. With the exception of a forwarding note to parents, this book is written entirely for teenagers, and the first 75 pages explain why school is a waste of time. Grace Llewellyn insists that people learn better when they are self-motivated and not confined by school walls. Instead of homeschooling, which connotes setting up a school at home, Llewellyn prefers "unschooling," a learning method with no structure or formal curriculum. There are tips here you won't hear from a school guidance counselor. Llewellyn urges kids to take a vacation--at least for a week--after quitting school to purge its influence. "Throw darts at a picture of your school" or "Make a bonfire of old worksheets," she advises. She spends an entire chapter on the gentle art of persuading parents that this is a good idea. Then she gets serious. Llewellyn urges teens to turn off the TV, get outside, and turn to their local libraries, museums, the Internet, and other resources for information. She devotes many chapters to books and suggestions for teaching yourself science, math, social sciences, English, foreign languages, and the arts. She also includes advice on jobs and getting into college, assuring teens that, contrary to what they've been told in school, they won't be flipping burgers for the rest of their days if they drop out.

Llewellyn is a former middle-school English teacher, and she knows her audience well. Her formula for making the transition from traditional school to unschooling is accompanied by quotes on freedom and free thought from radical thinkers such as Steve Biko and Ralph Waldo Emerson. And Llewellyn is not above using slang. She capitalizes words to add emphasis, as in the "Mainstream American Suburbia-Think" she blames most schools for perpetuating. Some of her attempts to appeal to young minds ring a bit corny. She weaves through several chapters an allegory about a baby whose enthusiasm is squashed by a sterile, unnatural environment, and tells readers to "learn to be a human bean and not a mashed potato." let freedom ring

"She had the ambition of Napoleon and the talent of your average high school valedictorian."

This Ernest Hemingway quotation supposedly about his third wife, Martha Gellhorn, somehow fits with the spirit of The Teenage Liberation Handbook. Though I don't agree with Hemingway's assessment of Gellhorn, I couldn't help but think of it when reading this book.

Grace Llewellyn's THL is not just a volume about how to homeschool (though she prefers the term "unschool," with self-directed learning based on ever-expanding interests being the primary occupation of young people). The book is also a direct attack on American schools, particularly high schools, and how they have managed to turn truly fascinating subjects into a series of meaningless assignments, make learning a chore and create lemmings out of otherwise bright and alive individuals. Because of their dictatorship tactics ("Jane, could you please go to the bathroom before class starts?" "Harry, this is not math class, so please put your math book away!"), Llewellyn posits, schools undermine the very basis of American democracy. And you know what? She's right.

At the beginning, Llewellyn recounts her own experience with the epitome of anti-democratic institutions known as the American (and not just public) school. In a telling anecdote, she relates how she and some friends joined forces in junior high school to circulate a petition indicting the school lunchroom for serving food unfit to eat. Several students signed the petition, only for it to be confiscated by a teacher and relayed to the principal. Llewellyn's friends had to report to the principal, who informed them that there would be no more complaints or petitions about lunchroom food or anything else. At that same time, Llewellyn sent a letter to the governor of her state, who responded, gave her a resource to contact about the quality of her school's food, and thanked her and her friends for promoting democracy. Now, is anyone shocked that the school squelched this most basic freedom of expression while an elected politician encouraged it? Hardly.

But not only do schools rob their students of their fundamental rights as Americans, they also make learning a tasteless, dull chore. Think about the people who scored the top grades in your school--were they bright, alive, vibrant individuals who loved learning and had a curiosity about every subject that they turned into excellent grades? Not at my school. Instead, they had "the talent of your average high school valedictorian." They knew how to manipulate the system and come away from it without being the slightest bit improved by their "education." I don't think they were exceptions.

Llewellyn pulls out all the stops in her critique of school. It's an outdated, archaic institution that makes slaves out of people whom it should be liberating. This critique is not too strong. After reading this book, I felt vindicated in all the frustration and resentment I ever felt in middle and high school.

A diatribe against schooling would have been enough for me to like this book, but Llewellyn outdoes herself by showing how to make unschooling all it can be. She warns against reconstructing school at home and instead offers countless resources for teens wanting to take their education into their own hands.

I passed this book along to my cousin, who homeschools her three children but so far has more or less stuck to "school at home." In reading just a few pages, she's already made some changes that have benefited both her and her children. I can't wait to see what happens when she finishes the book.

A note to parents: Llewellyn operates from the assumption that you all love your teens beyond belief and want what's best for them. Therefore, her advice to teens follows the reasoning that they should help you come to see that "rising out" of school is the best for them. Listen closely, and read the book. I know from personal experience that self-directed learning will prepare a student for college better than pretty much any high school could hope to.

I was outraged

I was a very fortunate person as I knew Grace Llewellyn personally and was privelaged to read a copy of the book when it first came out. When I she told me about the book I rolled my eyes and shrugged my shoulders, "that's Grace" I thought. I felt certain that I would find the book well written but would disagree with it right down to the premise. I had an excellent High School experience and held a BA from a very good private college. I felt that schooling had been to my beneifit.
But when I read the book my reaction was one of sorrow and outrage that I had not had this book when I was a teenager. I gave it to my Mom to read and she is now a huge supporter of Ms. Llewellyn's work as well. This is significant as my mother is a former community college administrator.
Reading this book is risky, dangerous, frightening. It will open your eyes to truths you don't want to know and ideas you don't want to think. It will make you question the systems we have set up for education. It might make you quit school, it might make you wish you had.

My teen just wouldn't read it all...I think, w/online courses offered today that its onlyj OK...I'm sure when it first came out it was essential but not so much any longer....the online EDU opportunities are changing the entire landscape for homeschooling....nicely written and very sincere tho.

Tools for fighting fair and dreaming again

"It all starts with the vows: for richer or for poorer. . . . Every marriage starts with big hopes and dreams. . . . And then life happens." (p.3) The authors Scott and Bethany Palmer, experienced financial planners known as the money Couple, begin their new book with these words that ring true. For those of us who have been married for some time, we can understand this. The authors go on, "And over time through no fault of your own those dreams you had for your life together get put on the back burner and, one by one, they start to dry up and disappear." (p.4) Then they follow up this opening section with this intriguing claim: "If you've lost track of the dreams you used to have, we believe you can get them back. We believe you can reclaim the life you envisioned, one dream at a time." (p.6) When I read this excerpt I decided I wanted to check out their claims.

This is no Dave Ramsey tome, though. The Palmers are patently clear about this in their introduction:

"Before you jump in, we want to be clear about something: this book is not a guide to managing your money. You won't find tricks for creating a balanced budget or tips on saving money. . . . This book is about you and your marriage, It's about the way your money and your relationship combine to create a Money Relationship. That's right -- you and your spouse have a Money Relationship, just like you have an emotional relationship, a spiritual relationship, and a physical relationship." (p. xiv)

So, if you are looking to make or manage money, stay clear. This book won't help you. But if you want to understand this Money Relationship and reclaim your dreams, this book might hit the target.
The heart of the book focuses on the 5 Money Personalities: the Saver, the Spender, the Security-Seeker, the Risk-Taker and the Flyer. According to the Palmers, we all possess a primary money personality and a secondary one. These contribute to our unique money DNA and determine how we see the world.

Further, they posit that every decision in our marriage relationship is impacted by money, whether it relates to spending or saving, affording or dreaming. Whether we like it or not, money is there, an ever-present undercurrent impacting how we get along. Buy money, like religion and politics, is something we rarely discuss with others, even spouses. By discovering our own two money personalities and then those of our spouse, we can then see how they interact and lead us into financial arguments. With this knowledge and self-understanding we can begin to build a plan, not a budget, for how we approach money and spending. In so doing, the Palmers argue, we can recapture our dreams.

The book is short, at 180 pages, and is written in an approachable and easy-to-read manner. There is little of academic depth here, and that is one criticism. It could stand some references, or support for theses, like why are there 5 money personalities and not four or six (or even more). Yet perhaps this is nit-picking, since most readers will come to this for help, like visiting a counselor. Such people don't really want chapter and verse. They trust the expert and simply want tools to function better in their own lives and situations.

That said, the authors introduce us to several tools. The first is "the reveal," where we find our two money personalities and share with our spouse. They even offer a free yet simple quiz on-line to help with this. Even though I had correctly pegged my two money personalities, when I took the on-line quiz I was surprised to find they were reversed in terms of primary and secondary, and this helped me understand some of my financial worries. This tool is foundational to the rest.

So, too, is their concept of financial infidelity, where we keep some financial secrets, big or small, from our spouse. This forms the root of the financial arguing that often leads to divorce ("money has become the number one cause of divorce in the United States"), but can be nipped in the bud with the use of transparency and their other tools.

The final three tools are the Money Dump, the Money Huddle, and the E.N.D. The first is an exercise of looking at the pros and cons of your finances and then sharing one con with your spouse. The second is an intentional monthly connection point for 45 minutes, focused on your Money Relationship not your specific bills and budgets. And the third tool describes how to Huddle. The first 15 minutes is spent on Evaluation two simple numbers: "how much debt you have and how much you have in savings" (p.135). The second 15 minute focuses on Needs, those that relate uniquely to our own money personalities and impact our mutual Money Relationship. The tool allows us to be vulnerable and build trust. The final 15 minutes winds up with Dreams. Here is where we share our dreams and plan to make one or more happen.

These tools seem so obvious, almost common sense. They center on communication. But in our busy society, with differences between husband and wife, we may find it difficult to open up with our spouse, either through time or temperament. The beauty of these tools is that they encourage us to make the time and take the opportunity for such sharing. And for good measure, they give us the Stop (reacting out of anger), Drop (your financial assumptions), and Roll (up your sleeves and work it out) technique for fighting fair in financial arguments.

The book is intended to be read with your spouse over a period of 90 days. This is to force reflection and discussion, and to instill new habits in both. I must confess that I have not done this, since I was under a deadline to write this review. So I cannot comment on the efficacy of the tools, even though they appear practical. However, I am planning to go back and reread the book and work the exercises at the start of 2013 -- a New Year's resolution I intend to honor. And I am hoping to dream again!
