She has participated in many road rallies, and have organized even more, specializing in rallies with a Halloween theme. She decided to write a book on road rallies when people continuous came to her for advice on how to organize a road rally. The original "helpful hints" grew to be considerable, so she decided to publish the book to help other people who would like to hold and/or participate in road rallies. Book focuses on an obscure form of Road Rally

The book is reasonably OK but it should be pointed out that the focus of the book is not on Road Rally in general but on Gimmick rallies and more specifically puzzle style gimmick rallies and even more specifically puzzles like word scrambles that may not involve looking out of the vehicle. The large majority of Road Rallies in the US are not of this type and the book does not venture to explain that there are in fact many types of Road Rallies and that it is narrowly focused on a pretty obscure type. With so few books on Road Rallying this one does a disservice to the rally community by selling itself as "Road Rally" without qualification. I admit I bought for the book title alone and I was very disappointed.

Step-by-step Clue Hunts

This book is not about a traditional road rally, but more a clue hunt how-to book. Clue hunts are generally run at night (for about 3-4 hours) and end at a restaurant or hall. Diane takes you step by step through the process, including clues, tips and forms. For anyone putting on a clue hunt, this is a great reference book!

This is one book that you MUST HAVE, especially if you are planning a road rally of your own. It will guide you, chapter by chapter with easy to follow examples(and forms), through the planning and implementing stages of making your road rally "one to be remembered!". Diane's many years of experience in planning and organizing road rallies will make you an expert, too!

Purple Hibiscus, Nigerian-born writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's debut, begins like many novels set in regions considered exotic by the western reader: the politics, climate, social customs, and, above all, food of Nigeria (balls of fufu rolled between the fingers, okpa bought from roadside vendors) unfold like the purple hibiscus of the title, rare and fascinating. But within a few pages, these details, however vividly rendered, melt into the background of a larger, more compelling story of a joyless family. Fifteen-year-old Kambili is the dutiful and self-effacing daughter of a rich man, a religious fanatic and domestic tyrant whose public image is of a politically courageous newspaper publisher and philanthropist. No one in Papa's ancestral village, where he is titled "Omelora" (One Who Does For the Community), knows why Kambili¹s brother cannot move one of his fingers, nor why her mother keeps losing her pregnancies. She and her brother, Jaja, and their quiet mother, who speaks "the way a bird eats, in small amounts," live this life of luxury because Kambili's father is a wealthy man who owns factories, publishes a politically outspoken newspaper and outwardly leads the moral, humble life of a faithful Catholic. The many grateful citizens who have received his blessings and material assistance call him omelora, "The One Who Does for the Community." Yet Kambili, Jaja and their mother see a side to their provider no one else does: he is also a religious fanatic who regularly and viciously beats his family for the mildest infractions of his interpretation of an exemplary Christian life. The children know better than to discuss their home life with anyone else; "there was so much that we never told." But when they are unexpectedly allowed to visit their liberated and loving Aunty Ifeoma, a widowed university professor raising three children, family secrets and tensions bubble dangerously to the surface, setting in motion a chain of events that allow Kambili to slowly blossom as she begins to question the authority of the precepts and adults she once held sacred. In a soft, searing voice, Adichie examines the complexities of family, faith and country through the haunted but hopeful eyes of a young girl on the cusp of womanhood. Adult/High School-Kambili, 15, and her older brother, Jaja, live under a brutal dictatorship in their native Nigeria and also in their home. Their father beats them and their mother for the slightest perceived offense. Papa is also a fanatic Christian who gives freely of his immense wealth and is admired by all. The children's world changes when they are allowed to visit their Aunty Ifeoma, who teaches in a university town nearby and lives a relaxed life on little money. Her children talk back, have messy rooms, and help cook wonderful food. And their beloved grandfather, Papa-Nnukwu, favors the old gods. Kambili meets Father Amadi, a liberal priest, and falls in love with him. Upon Nnukwu's death, Papa arrives to take them home, but Jaja now questions his authority, and when Papa finds Kambili with a picture of her heathen grandfather, he kicks and beats her so severely that she is hospitalized. Mama poisons Papa's food, but Jaja confesses to the murder and is imprisoned. The Nigerian government falls; Aunty Ifeoma loses her job and leaves with her children for America; and Father Amadi leaves for his next assignment. Yet there is hope that after three years in prison, Jaja will be released, and Mama finally smiles. Aunty Ifeoma and their cousins have brought joy and laughter to Kambili and Jaja, and that cannot be taken away. This is a harsh story, almost unbearable at first, but beautifully written.

A young girl navigates family and social upheaval

This is a memorable coming-of-age novel, Adichie's first. It takes place during the military dictatorship of the 1990's, whose oppressive shadow is everywhere. Fifteen-year old Kambili belongs a privileged sector of Nigerian Igbo Catholic society, but is far from privileged. In its focus on suffocating religion and patriarchy Purple Hibiscus reminded me of the novels of Miriam Toews (on growing up as a rebel Mennonite), but Kambili's father is more of a monster than anyone in Toews' books, abusive as he was abused as a boy by colonial priests. Politics and religion dominate the novel. Nearly every character resists the military regime and its violent enforcers in some way, whether by open rebellion or quiet survival. Fuel shortages dominate daily life; grocery shopping trips are planned around the last gallon of gas. The university where her aunt teaches is shut down following student uprisings. I loved the landscapes, the humor, the flowers and foods. I also loved her "traditionalist" grandfather and her marvelous aunt. Her father is interesting and multi-dimensional: a tyrant to his family, a hero to the resistance against the military regime. Religion is also many-sided: a link to the pre-colonial past, a tool of colonialism and white supremacy, a guide to the "just" life, a prison for women and children...What I didn't love is the sentimentalizing of a (platonic but sexually loaded) relationship between a fifteen-year-old and her charismatic priest. With all we know about pedophile priests this is jarring and inadvertently sinister. The novel has other flaws inherent in choosing a main character with the Stockholm syndrome- Kambili is so passive, so victimized, that it is hard to believe in her if it were not for her admiration of the strong women around her. I want to read all of Abichie's books now. From her TED talk: "I am angry. Gender as it functions today is a grave injustice. We should all be angry. Anger has a long history of bringing about positive change, but in addition to being angry, I’m also hopeful because I believe deeply in the ability of human beings to make and remake themselves for the better."

You Have to Read this Book!

Wow, this was a very, very good story. Chima kept me interested throughout the entire book. I wanted to know and learn more about the characters (especially the father in the story); and, to know what’s going to happen next. And having been to Nigeria a couple of times, she managed to "send me back" there by mixing in some of the language, customs, and "flavors of life" and the experiences of the people. As I was reading, I would close my eyes and imagine the scene: The room, the food, whatever she was describing. I found myself in a part of Nigeria, or at least temporarily! The way the book ended, it could also be a sequel...?! Also, having read two of her other books “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “That Thing Around Your Neck”, Ms. Ngozi has quickly become one of my favorite writers. I’m about to read her next book “Americanah”. Look for my review of that one soon!

Moody, complex and interesting story!

This was my first Adichie Novel and I have since gone on to read several others because I enjoyed this one so much. I found myself transported to the town when the story takes place and felt as thought I were an invited guest to be witness to the trials and tribulations of the characters. It was nice to get a glimpse into the world of the Nigerian people from a perspective we don't often get here in the US. I would recommend this book for a book club, or general discussion between friends. There are parts of the story that are difficult to consume but most likely represent the realities in some peoples lives. The Author did not try to hid these realities and by including them in the story it adds additional texture and makes the characters that much more real though some less likable.

Wonderfully robust research, muddled support for thesis

In a brief but lucid introduction to her monograph, Lyndal Roper states her argument plainly for the reader. The last sentence of the section reads, "The conservative rewriting of the Reformation movement's message around a politics of women's role in marriage and household was the key to its successful implementation and establishment." Roper's thesis is that evangelical Protestant doctrine conquered Augsburg not because it offered radical social change, but rather because it became a spiritual buttress for traditional gender roles in marriage. This is a departure from the more conventional view of the Reformation, when it was portrayed a more liberating social order for the average woman, at least when compared to the traditional Christianity practiced prior to the sixteenth century. The Holy Household has a straight-forward structure; Roper devotes chapters to analysis of sin, prostitution, wedding rites, expectations of marital relations, and the treatment of Catholic nuns. Roper's analysis of daily life in Augsburg, from the early sixteenth century to about 1550 (the period of the Catholic restoration), is certainly masterful.

A staggering list of works cited, both printed and unprinted sources, takes up over twenty pages of the book. The majority of footnotes for particular arguments refer the reader to the mass of primary local and municipal archives Roper sifted through to find support for her thesis. When secondary works are cited, the footnote is usually a brief aside about parallel works, potential counter-arguments, or points of dissension between Roper's case and the traditional study of the Reformation. By making such obvious use of primary sources, Roper lends a great amount of credibility to her research, and at a few points in the book even delves into literary analysis of the use of certain German words during the period. For instance, there is a discussion of the various terms used by the Augsburg Council to describe sin and discipline to citizens. This meticulous investigation into period archives provides an accessible portrait of life in Reformation Augsburg and proves Roper's ability as a researcher.

However, does this scholarship prove Roper's thesis? Ultimately, her argument puts the cart before the horse. Copious examples throughout the book illustrate that gender roles and marriage relations became increasingly calcified throughout the period due to the policies of the Protestant government of Augsburg. They founded these beliefs on Biblical tenets, but also on cultural mores extant at the time. The Protestant Reformation hardly liberated women from habitual gender roles and in fact became more patriarchal and sexually repressive as it advanced. This much Roper exhaustively proves. Ignored are other attributes of early modern Augsburg that found vindication in the Reformation, which may do more to explain the movement's success than the power offered to men over women. For example, the erasure of Catholic stigma attached to commerce and trade surely appealed to the predominately artisan city. While Roper articulates the sexual deviancy associated with Catholic clergy, and particularly emphasizes the (real or imagined) connection of women's sexual misbehavior with priests, she ignores other jealousies the laity harbored towards their clerics. Privileges of treatment under the law, taxation, and other perquisites rankled with potential Protestants. All of these were contributing factors to the dominance and domestication of the Reformation. While the benefits to be enjoyed from using the movement to solidify male power and strengthen traditional patriarchal authority were certainly enticing, they could not have been the only reasons for the whole-hearted success of the Protestant reforms in Augsburg.

Poor thesis detracts from this otherwise fine work.

University of Oxford professor, Dr. Lyndal Roper, paints a contrarian view of the Protestant Reformation in her work The Holy Household: Women and Morals in Reformation Augsburg. In it, she suggests that far from being the "priesthood of all believers" that early Reformers idealized and sold as a liberation movement, the Protestant Reformation actually worsened conditions for the female half of the population. She argues this point on many social fronts of 16th century Augsburg: in marriage, sexuality, the practice of prostitution and the elimination of convents. While Roper's case clearly holds in regard to nuns, who lost all freedom to operate their convents and the status that came with being a "bride of Christ" under the Catholic regime, the rest of her argument is not as strong. In terms of the financially dependent condition women were confined to under both Protestantism and Catholicism, where the average woman's security was tied to either her marital status or the wealth of her male relatives, women fared better under Protestant encouragement of strong marriage and, according to Roper's own findings, enjoyed greater legal protections in terms of stabilization of marriage, verdicts in their favor through the Marriage Court, and finally through the abolition of brothels that really served to weaken existing marriages and exploit women rather than provide them financial opportunity.

Although the thesis is weak, Roper does an admirable job bringing post-Reformation Augsburg to life.

Maggie hope is an excellent writer and she takes the period of the thirties and the struggle of women at that time and of a girl growing up at that time and creates a story which has been related many times but which she develops in an entertaining way to someone who was not born in that time and has not lived in that part of the world.

Hooray! On Kindle At Last

This is one of my favourite escapist reads. I can't count the number of times since receiving my first Kindle 4 years ago that I checked for Judith Michael's books in the Kindle Store. Now they're here and I'm ready to revisit this story.

A young woman is bequeathed a chain of hotels but is cheated out of that inheritance by disgruntled and disinherited family members. She goes on to make a name for herself by creating a chain of upscale hotels.

It's your basic rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story with a little romance along the way. If you're looking for a hot bubble bath soak of a book, you can't go wrong with this one.

Nothing better than a long glorious read to make an evening relaxing! Just because this book is not currently on the new best selling list does not mean it should be ignored. Some of the best reads are out of the seventies and eighties. This is one of the finest.

Great story

A woman who strives for everything and in her own gets it. But then tragedy strikes and it's all taken from her.

This is a story of how such a huge loss can show you how to grow and mature and win back the things that you had lost. She gained everything back, was accepted back into the family and found her true love once more.

Laura is a very strong woman and with the help of family you can achieve anything that you want in life.

Jim Owens has worked and taught in the video and television industry for over 30 years. His international television work has included fourteen Olympic broadcasts and has taken him to over thirty countries. He is the author of the Video Production Handbook, Television Production, and Television Sports Production and has had over thirty articles published in television and broadcast magazines in the United States and Europe. Owens is Dean of the School of Communication Arts at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, where he has taught since 1981.
